First set

A tense rally ends with Safin making a backhand error to give Federer two set points. The Russian digs deep to save the first with a dipping backhand pass and the second with a brave forehand down the line.

Federer is forced to play his best tennis to survive another close game. The second seed takes control of matters from 30-30 onwards and the least he can hope for now is a tiebreak.

Federer 5-5 Safin
Federer wins the rally of the match so far with a delightful passing shot, after some astonishing defence from Safin. The Russian comes back from 15-30 down to level the set.

Federer 5-4 Safin
A good approach from Safin is swatted away crosscourt by Federer, who goes on to hold to 15.

Federer still appears to be dwelling on failing to consolidate the break of serve as Safin holds comfortably.

Federer 4-3 Safin
Safin cracks his racket in a moment of frustration - but the Russian plays on with it and fires a forehand return winner on the next point. He goes on to force two break points, taking the second with a trademark backhand down the line.

Federer 4-2 Safin
Federer breaks Safin for a second time, the world number one forcing his opponent into an error at the net at the crucial moment.

Federer 3-2 Safin
Federer holds to 30, sealing it with his favourite serve out wide.

Federer 2-2 Safin
Safin gets himself into trouble with a tense forehand into the net and though he saves a first break point, Federer steps up the pace on a second and breaks back immediately.

Federer 1-2 Safin
Safin has the crowd on its feet with a sizzling forehand pass. Under pressure at 15-30, Federer delivers his first double fault and nets a forehand to give Safin an early break.

Federer 1-1 Safin
Safin's serve is firing already and it allows him to hold to 15.

Federer 1-0 Safin
Federer wins the toss and elects to serve. It is a shaky start from the Swiss, who makes two forehand errors, but Safin is unable to capitalise.
