Meghann Shaughnessy
Born: 13/12/79
Nationality: American
Seeded: 17
World ranking: 20
Australian Open best:
Quarter-final (2003)
Recent record:
2003: Quarter-final
2002: 3rd round
2001: 2nd round
Shaughnessy fought her way back into the world's top 20 last year after injury and a loss of form had seen her slip back in 2002.

Like most of her compatriots she is at her best on hardcourts, and the 24-year-old took advantage of that in the early part of 2003.

Australia has proved a happy hunting ground in recent years and so it proved last January when Shaughnessy claimed her third tour title in Canberra.

The following week was even better as she made the last eight of a Grand Slam for the first time before losing to Serena Williams.

She then made the semi-finals in Scottsdale, the fourth round in Indian Wells and the last eight in Miami, before a disappointing claycourt season.

In truth, there was not much else to cheer in 2003 until the US Open, where she reached the last 16 before going down to Kim Clijsters.
