3. Martina Hingis

DOB: 30.09.1980
Nationality: Swiss
World Ranking: 4
Australian Open record:
2001 :: runner-up
2000 :: runner-up
1999 :: winner
1998 :: winner
1997 :: winner

The winner of five Grand Slam singles titles, Hingis will be looking to go one better than last year's defeat in the final to Jennifer Capriati.

The Swiss Miss was also knocked out in the semi-finals at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows in 2001 in what was ultimately a disappointing 12 months.

She has now failed to win a Grand Slam in her last 11 attempts.

But she is the only player in history to have won the singles and doubles titles at a Grand Slam three years running using a different doubles partner each time (Australian Open).

At 21 years old she is also the youngest player to have won 300 professional matches.
