27. Sjeng Schalken

DOB: 08.09.1976
Nationality: Dutch
World Ranking: 29
Australian Open record:
2001 :: first round
2000 :: second round
1999 :: second round
1998 :: first round
1997 :: first round

The tall Dutchman starts the year with the confidence of a good finish to last season to fall back on.

Schalken won his sixth tour title with a win a Stockholm last October.

A quarter-final place followed in the Masters Series event in Paris and, although he favours clay, the 25-year-old is adept on all surfaces.

Now he will want to transfer that sort of form onto the Grand Slam stage where he has never progressed beyond the third round in 26 attempts.
