16. Thomas Johansson

DOB: 24.03.1975
Nationality: Swedish
World Ranking: 18
Australian Open record:
2001 :: third round
2000 :: second round
1999 :: first round
1998 :: first round
1997 :: second round

Johansson has played in seven Australian Opens but is yet to reach the second week of the tournament.

The Swede turned professional in 1994 and has since won six tour titles, two last year.

Both wins came on grass in the build up to Wimbledon when he won at Halle and Nottingham, going 12 games unbeaten in the process.

He stayed to the latter stages of many lesser competitions and on a one-off level beat Pat Rafter in the Davis Cup semi-finals in October.

Now the 26-year-old needs to develop that consistency to last the course of a longer competitions.

Johansson owes his place in the top 16 to Juan Carlos Ferrero's late withdrawal.
