Nationality: Chilean
World Ranking: 17
Australian Open record:

2001 :: first round
2000 :: n/a

1998 :: n/a
1997 :: n/a

Gonzalez will have happy memories on his return to Melbourne Park after announcing himself on the world stage by reaching the last 16 last year.

The Chilean then headed straight for his home country and collected a tour title in Vina del Mar.

Tim Henman twice suffered against Gonzalez, admitting after the second encounter that he had never been on the receiving end of such powerful groundstrokes.

The 22-year-old also picked up wins against Pete Sampras, Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero, and established his reputation with a run to the last eight of the US Open.

Gonzalez looks set to be a force in the game and is capable of blasting anyone off the court, but his form can dip from moment to moment which will harm his Grand Slam chances.
