6. Roger Federer

DOB: 08.08.1981
Nationality: Swiss
World Ranking: 6
Australian Open record:
2002 :: fourth round
2001 :: third round
2000 :: third round
1999 :: n/a
1998 :: n/a
1997 :: n/a

Federer began the year knowing it is time for him to deliver on his enormous potential.

The 21-year-old has been tipped as a future number one for several seasons and has shown flashes of that form on his way to securing a top-10 spot.

Only Gustavo Kuerten can rival Federer for the best backhand in the game, but the Swiss player has more weapons in his armoury.

What has been lacking so far is the aggression shown by Lleyton Hewitt, and Federer can too easily slip into a predictable baseline game.

That may be why he has yet to succeed at Grand Slam level, although a steady improvement over the last two years in Melbourne should give cause for optimism.
