![]() Williams pair take doubles crown
![]() The Williams sisters justified their number one seeding
Venus and Serena Williams fought back from a set down to win the Australian Open women's doubles final against Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez.
The American pair, who face each other in the women's singles final, came through to win 4-6 6-4 6-3 at Melbourne Park. Friday's match was played with the roof closed on the Rod Laver Arena to protect the players from the dangerous heat. With temperatures reaching 37 degrees, tournament officials took the decision to enclose the court.
World number one doubles pairing Ruano Pascual, of Spain, and Suarez, of Argentina, immediately turned up the heat on the Williams sisters by taking the first set, with Serena's serve looking vulnerable. But the Williams sisters responded to justify their top seeding ahead of their opponents by fighting back to take the last two sets. The sisters had already won all four Grand Slam doubles events, as well as the 2000 Olympic gold, and have not been beaten together for 16 months. But despite their imposing record, they needed a wildcard to enter the tournament because Venus did not play enough events last year to earn a doubles ranking. |
