Haas heads for Safin semi
Tommy Haas takes a tumble during his victory over Marcelo Rios
Tommy Haas is the Open's highest surviving seed
Seventh seed Tommy Haas reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open with a four-set win over Marcelo Rios.

He defeated the Chilean former finallist 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 6-7 (2/7) 7-6 (7/5) to set up a last four meeting with tournament favourite Marat Safin.

Haas said: "I've tried to be consistent over the last couple of months and my serve was good tonight, especially in the first two sets, when he had a lot of break points but couldn't convert them.

"He played an unbelievable tiebreak in the third set, but I got through in the fourth set well."

Haas, who also reached the Australian Open semi-finals in 1999, took the first set on a tiebreak, 7-2.

Fighting

Rios held break points in three games of the second set but could not convert any of them.

In contrast, Haas broke at the first opportunity and took the set 6-4.

Rios saved two match points against Haas
Rios looked like fighting his way back into the match when he hustled through the third set tiebreak 7-2 and then broke Haas in the first game of the fourth.

But a double fault on break point in the next game took the wind out of Rios' sails.

Both men held serve to the tie break, but Haas raced to a 5-1 lead.

Rios bravely saved the first two of his opponent's three match points but then put a backhand into the net to send Haas through.
