Safin destroys Sampras' dreams
Safin will fancy his chances in the quarter-final
Safin will play Ferreira in the last eight
Marat Safin sent out a warning to his rivals for the Australian Open crown with a convincing four-set win over Pete Sampras.

Despite a spirited Sampras fightback, Safin ran out a 6-2 6-4 6-7 7-6 winner.

The young Russian, who made his name by beating Sampras in the US Open final of 2000, took advantage of his opponent's sluggish start to claim the first set easily.

Sampras gave away his first service game with two double faults and a pair of errant volleys.

With his volley again letting him down, Sampras found himself 4-0 down and eventually lost the set 6-2.

Sampras had no answer to Safin
Sampras saw a succession of winners go past him
Safin gave his opponent no openings in the second set and a single break of serve ensured he opened up a two-set lead.

When Safin broke again at the start of the third set, the writing appeared to be on the wall.

But Sampras fought back to level and forced a tie-break.

As the Russian became increasingly frustrated with line-calls, Sampras took his chance, winning the tie-break 7-5.

The fourth set was a tight affair and always looked destined to go all the way.

Sampras was tested when serving at 5-6 and 0-30 down, but he kept his nerve to force another tie-break.

The American took the early advantage with a mini-break on the first point.

But Safin worked his way back and hit an amazing passing shot down the line to clinch victory at the second time of asking.
