Defending champion Jennifer Capriati made an impressive start to the defence of her title with a comfortable win over Croatia's Silvija Talaja in the Australian Open first round.

The American made short work of Talaja, winning 6-4 6-1 to reach the second round in just 62 minutes.

The 25-year-old had her right thigh heavily strapped after suffering a hip injury in last week's Sydney International.

But after the game Capriati explained the injury was not as serious as it looked.

"It was just precautionary. I felt comfortable and I'm excited to be back here," said the New Yorker.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
Sanchez Vicario reached the final in 1994 and 1995

Two-time finalist Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario's bid for the title came to a swift end as she was ousted by Croatia's Iva Majoli.

Majoli's participation in the tournament had been in doubt after she suffered a shoulder injury in a warm-up tournament.

But the 1997 French Open champion outfought the 14th seed to register a 6-4 7-5 win.

Fourth seed Kim Clijsters followed boyfriend Lleyton Hewitt onto Centre Court but while the men's top seed crashed out, she eased through against Australian wildcard Christina Wheeler.

Clijsters dominated the match and secured a 6-2 6-1 victory in just 52 minutes.

Number seven seed Amelie Mauresmo joined Capriati in the second round with a comprehensive win over Taiwan's Janet Lee.

The Australian Open runner-up in 1999 crushed Lee 6-1, 6-0.

Former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez moved into the second round when her opponent was forced to withdraw because of injury.

The unseeded Spaniard was leading 3-6 6-3 2-0 when Lina Krasnoroutskaya retired with a sprained left ankle.

The Russian was a replacement for Serena Williams who had also been forced to pull out because of an injured ankle.
