Hingis powers on in Moscow
![]() Hingis dropped just one game on her way to victory
Top seed Martina Hingis strolled into the quarter-finals of the WTA Kremlin Cup in Moscow with a
6-0 6-1 demolition of Kveta Hrdlickova.
The world number one, who received a bye in the first round, took just 40 minutes to dispose of her hopelessly outclassed opponent from the Czech Republic. Hingis, who won the Swisscom Challenge last week, said she was happy with her form. "I'm playing my best tennis now and feel good and that's why I experienced no problems today," she said. "I always wanted to come to Moscow to make my mark on this famous city," she added. Battle The 20-year-old Swiss was joined in the last eight by second seed and defending champion Natalie Tauziat. The French player had no problems in the opening set against Japan's Ai Sugiyama, but was forced to battle harder in the second before triumphing 6-3 7-5. Local favourites Tatiana Panova and Elena Dementieva gave the home crowd something to cheer as they booked their quarter-final berths. Panova took nearly two hours to overcome Argentina's Paola Suarez in three sets, 6-2 4-6 6-1, while Dementieva, the Olympic silver medallist, was also taken the distance. The 19-year-old had to come from a set down before overcoming Silvia Farina-Elia of Italy 2-6 6-4 6-4. |
