1601: ... I should add that Tsonga v Berdych is not on BBC TV, it's on Sky - although you can listen to it on 5 live Sports Extra and read the humble written word on this website...

1553: ... I should add that, because of that victory, Federer will finish the year ahead of Britain's Andy Murray in third, meaning that's nine straight years he's finished the year in the top three. Also, in a recent survey or other, Federer was apparently voted the second-most admired man in the world, just behind Nelson Mandela and ahead of Bill Gates. Johnny Ball was fourth. Tsonga v Berdych at 2000 GMT, rejoin us then.

1545: That's nine wins in a row now for Federer at the season-ending championships and his seventh final in all. Strange game really - Ferrer came out buzzing, Federer looked badly out of sorts in the first set, but once the world number four had come through that, there was only one winner. Federer will play the winner of tonight's game between Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday's final - it will be Federer's 100th career final and, if he wins, he will become the first man to win the season-ending event six times, surpassing Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

Federer 7-5 6-3 Ferrer
Marathon rally before Federer sprays a forehand wide. Federer makes it 30-30 courtesy of a clubbed forehand down the line but follows up with a ballooned forehand. The nets at the O2 are strung as taut as cheese-wire - net cord and Federer is the lucky one. Federer then outlasts Ferrer in a lengthy exchange and it's match point... Federer's eyes widen into saucers but his attempted forehand winner lands miles long. Federer then outwits his rival in a battle of slices before wrapping things up with a clubbed forehand that Ferrer is unable to withstand.

Federer 7-5 5-3 Ferrer*
Federer opens up with an ace - 79% of first serves in, he's yet to lose a point. Federer with smart hands at the net, putting away a backhand volley, and the world number four follows up with a solid overhead. Tremendous wrong-footing forehand from Federer and that's a hold to love...

*Federer 7-5 3-2 Ferrer
Good scrambling from Ferrer from out back and it eventually pays off as Federer bombs a forehand long. Federer lures Ferrer in with a sliced backhand and the Spaniard can only find the net to hand Federer two break points. A real crispness to Federer's groundstrokes now but he finds the net with a backhand to blow the first break point. Ferrer dredges up a meaty first serve to take the game to deuce - spunky - before Federer tugs a backhand wide. Well-played Ferrer - kept on punching and Federer eventually punched himself out, heaving a forehand long. Ferrer still alive...

*Federer 7-5 2-1 Ferrer
Federer revvs up a backhand to make it 30-30, he's hitting that top-spin shot with more regularity now. OUTRAGEOUS! Federer with the drop-shot, then the lob, then the knifed backhand volley - and Ferrer with the backhand pass on the scamper to hold. Lovely stuff.

*Federer 7-5 1-0 Ferrer
If Federer wins today he will tie Stefan Edberg with 806 wins in the Open era. Still a few hundred to go to catch Jimmy Connors, though. Ferrer working that forehand into a lather to make it 30-30 but he pushes a forehand wide to hand Federer a break point... Federer with a hammer return to seal the break, all of a sudden Ferrer, after that sparkling start, looks to have burnt out.

Federer 7-5 Ferrer*
Federer, who's been rather struggling with his game to be honest, serving for the set. Ferrer thrashes a forehand return long to make it 30-15 before bunting a backhand long to hand Federer two set points. Federer goes long with a backhand to give Ferrer a glimmer but the Swiss wraps up the set with a solid serve. Federer rusty, but Ferrer unable to heave him off his hinges.

*Federer 6-5 Ferrer
Well-crafted point from Federer, delaying the forehand down the middle before knifing the backhand volley winner. Great point - Ferrer fizzing forehands, Federer defending, but a net cord favours Federer and he eventually puts away the winning volley to create two break points. Ferrer saves one as Federer goes long with a return but Federer does break when Ferrer drags a forehand wide.

Federer 5-5 Ferrer*
Lucky net cord for Ferrer makes it 0-15 before Federer lunges and picks up a sweet drop-shot off his toes. Another ace on the T but he hasn't found his groove yet, sending another forehand wide to make it 30-30. Federer with another ace out wide but he goes long again to make it deuce - Ferrer really up for a punch-up out there. Federer wins the next point before yanking a lazy-looking forehand wide and is then outfoxed at the net by a buzzing Ferrer. Tremendous backhand volley from Ferrer to make it deuce again and he levels things again with a ripped forehand that Federer can only bunt into the net. At last, Federer puts together two in a row and after eight minutes of toe-to-toe tennis we're still with serve and all square again.

*Federer 4-5 Ferrer
Ferrer with an unforced error on the forehand flank before Federer wafts at a backhand, which arcs wide to make it 30-15. Federer's backhand is creaking badly, and there's another one that floats long. Ferrer squeaks his way into the next and puts away the backhand volley to hold with plenty to spare.

Federer with a wild and windy backhand, signs of tightness perhaps. The world number four sends down his frist ace to make it 40-30... and his second to hold...

*Federer 2-3 Ferrer
Two double-faults from Ferrer, the little dynamo suddenly losing his zing and tilting alarmingly from side to side. He works his way back into the game courtesy of a couple of unforced errors from Federer only to hand his rival a break point with a misdirected forehand. Ferrer scuttles into the net to save and Federer goes long with a backhand - chance gone, and he's already made more unforced errors in half a set than he did all match against Nadal.

1404: All signs point to a Federer victory in this first match - he leads their head-to-heads 11-0, has only dropped four sets against his Spanish rival, he's on a 15-match winning streak, is the defending champion and if he wins today it will be his 100th tour final. Furthermore, the Swiss's tennis in beating Rafael Nadal earlier this week was straight from the gods. Players are out, we'll have some play in a few minutes.

1400: Watcha. The season-ending jamboree has reached the semi-finals stage and the four players left standing are perhaps not who we expected them to be. World number one and 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer is the only one of the so-called 'big four' not to have been chased out of town and he's up first against Spain's David Ferrer, the number five seed. Dark horse Tomas Berdych faces Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the evening match.
