New world number two Novak Djokovic says he is in the best form of his life after beating Rafael Nadal to claim the Indian Wells ATP title.

It extended his winning run in singles matches in 2011 to 18 and he is aiming to continue that success on clay with the French Open title in his sights.

"I am extremely happy with the way I'm playing and with the success that I'm having," said Djokovic.

"I am having the best period of my life on court, but nobody is invincible."

Djokovic, 23, overtook Roger Federer in the world rankings as a result of his 6-3 3-6 6-2 victory over the 16-time Grand Slam champion in the Indian Wells semi-finals, but he is not resting on his laurels.

"I know that the season is very long, and I don't want to be too euphoric about the win," the Australian Open champion said. "I need to celebrate a little bit, and then move on."

"I have a big will to win each match I'm playing and I want to keep on going, keep on playing good tennis."

He is now gearing up for the challenge of playing on clay and is focused on the French Open in Paris.

"I believe I can play well on that surface [clay] and I have proven that in the last couple of years," said Djokovic.

"I had a great clay-court season in 2009 and 2008, and I've always played well at Roland Garros."

"In order to win trophies on that surface, big ones, I will need to be physically very, very fit."

"As the slowest surface, it requires a lot of physical strength and endurance and I have been working hard on it for a while. I will definitely pay attention to it more."

If the Serbian can successfully transfer his hard-court form to clay, he will challenge Nadal for the world number one spot.

And Nadal had praise for Djokovic after his impressive start to 2011.

"I just congratulate him," said Nadal. "He has done better than possible to start this season. He's in the right place at the right moment."
