Jamie Delgado's excellent run in the President's Cup in Tashkent finally came to an end when he was beaten by US Open champion Marat Safin 6-4 6-4.

The 23-year-old equalled his best-ever ATP Tour performance after coming through the qualifying rounds to reach the quarter-finals.

Delgado looked to be out of his depth when he lost his opening service game, but he fought back to break Safin in the eighth game of the match to level the first set at 4-4.

But The Russian immediately took the initiative again when he broke the Brit's serve to take the set.

Similar pattern

The second set followed a similar pattern to the first when Delgado broke back again after losing his serve, but only to be broken again by the world number three, who won the match in one hour 14 minutes.

But Despite his good performance, Delgado believed he could have taken advantage of his break-backs better if he had more experience.

He said: "It got quiet a few times and that exactly when you need to have the full confidence and full belief that you can beat someone like that and I haven't been in that position before.

"The disappointing thing for me was not to play the way I have been throughout the week.

New experience

"It's a new experience for me to play someone that good and that highly ranked, it's part of the learning curve."

His opponent believed he wasn't in the form which beat Pete Sampras at Flushing Meadows.

He said: "I'm satisfied with the match because I didn't play very well but I fought and tried to do my best.

"Now I have a big chance to be number one in the world."

Delgado, who is ranked 155th in the ATP standings, is likely to improve on that position after a successful tournament in the Uzbekistan capital.
