0005: Yeah, quite a good match that. I jest, it was amazing. I think we all need an hour or so to reflect on that and, in my case, grab some food. Meet you back here for the women's final soon after 0100 BST.

0005: Here are a few snatches of what Novak Djokovic had to say after that incredible win: "It's hard to describe the feelings - 10 minutes ago I was a point from losing but I've managed to come back. It was a pleasure playing in this sort of match and I will remember it forever. To be honest I was closing my eyes and hitting forehands as hard as I could. But I was lucky and it was a couple of points to decide the winner."

NOVAK DJOKOVIC BEATS ROGER FEDERER TO REACH US OPEN FINAL AGAINST RAFAEL NADAL

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 5-7 Djokovic
An epic first rally goes to Federer when he smacks a forehand down the line, and Djokovic then puts a backhand wide for 0-30. The Serb comes battling back and some fearless volleying at the net makes it 30-30, but moments later Federer has break point... Djokovic forces him out wide and the Swiss overdoes it with a forehand. Deuce... and Federer nets with a forehand! Match point for Djokovic... another huge rally... and Federer goes wide with the forehand!

Twitter
Alexlawson8 on twitter: "How good will Nadal be feeling soaking in his bubble bath watching these two fighting like mad to join him in tomorrows final!"

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 5-6 Djokovic *
A shonky Federer forehand into the tramlines has him at 15-30 but he levels with a lunging volley that Djokovic almost returns, only for it to clip the net. Federer then shanks one and it's break point for Djokovic... and Federer puts the forehand into the tramlines! Nole to serve for it.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 5-5 Djokovic
Federer toys with Djokovic on the first point, sending up two gentle lobs in the hope that the Serb will twitch. He does and finds the net with his second smash. A backhand error moments later sees NoDjo at 15-30 and two points from defeat. Long rally, tense rally, all a bit much.... and Djokovic sends a backhand wide! Two match points for Federer.... Djokovic saves the first with a fantastic drive-volley from up around his shoulders. I didn't fancy him for that, I've got to say. Match point two.... and Djokovic pulls a brilliant forehand down the line. Incredible stuff. Deuce, and NoDjo then has a rummage around in his top drawer and finds an even better forehand that has Arthur Ashe Stadium jumping. Federer is not done though, hooking a forehand cross-court before Djokovic guides a winner down the line. Where are we? What's the score? Game point Djokovic.. and Federer gets him with a forehand down the line. Nole comes through in the end with some big serves. Blimey.

Anne Keothavong on twitter: "I'm loving the Djokovic - Federer match. They make tennis look effortless. Not fair!"

Hawkeye
Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 5-4 Djokovic *
Federer is rocking after a forehand winner from Djokovic for 0-15 as the Swiss then looks to have gone long but, for once, Hawkeye is his friend and says he caught the line. A slightly iffy forehand then works for Federer and he sees it out.

Patrick McEnroe on twitter: "Wow. Does Fed pull this out?"

* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 4-4 Djokovic
Federer unloads on a forehand for 0-15, Djokovic responds with a wicked body serve. The Serb then goes long before Federer finds the net after chasing down a NoDjo volley. A big serve takes Djokovic to game point and Federer wallops a forehand long. Gripping stuff.

Kevin, Sussex, via text: "This is fabulous stuff from both players!!"

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 4-3 Djokovic *
What a game. Djokovic pegs Federer back to deuce, and the Swiss plays a couple of superb points interrupted by a bizarre mid-court miss. The hitting from both men right now is all-out. Federer misses another game point when a trick volley sneaks jus long. Deuce yet again, and Federer comes up with a rasping topspin backhand cross-court pass. A big serve digs him out of a hole on the seventh game point and that could be tough for Djokovic to get over.

Ferom Allie, Kent, via text: "Novak does like to toy with his fans nerves and emotions! not easy being a novak fan! should he win tonight i question his mental and physical ability to bounce back, his inconsistency is his biggest flaw! * Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 3-3 Djokovic
Djokovic gets a slice of luck with a net cord in the opening point and, one fizzing Federer forehand part, it's another straightforward service game. The Serbian fans are making their voices heard now.

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 3-2 Djokovic *
Federer moves in front again with a hold to 15 as we approach three hours of play in this match. "I think Djokovic needs to sit and wait, not change his game, and see if Federer plays another shoddy game on serve," says Jeff Tarango on live sports extra.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 2-2 Djokovic
Djokovic double faults for 15-15, and Federer then slams away a volley for 30-30 to raise the pressure. Anna Wintour is clapping away as heartily as she probably can, being a fashion type, but NoDjo ploughs on with a big serve to hold.

Djokovic takes the initiative with some big forehands and plays a nerveless smash for 15-30, but Federer responds with a brave chip and volley for 30-30. NoDjo then fires one over the baseline before Rog responds in kind. Deuce, and two service winners give Federer the game.

Novak Djokovic
* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 Djokovic
Djokovic plays a magnificent backhand drop shot for 15-15 but just misses with a lob two points later and it's 30-30. Federer gets a look at a second serve but chops a backhand into the net and it's set point... and Djokovic takes it with a sweetly-struck forehand winner, earning him a little picture in place of a flag. Time for a fifth.

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-5 Djokovic *
And hold he does. Federer forces Djokovic to serve it out.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 1-5 Djokovic
Twice Federer moves in for a short forehand, twice he sticks it in the net. This set is done and dusted, I'm telling you now. Rog will want to serve first in the fifth though, so needs a hold here.

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 1-4 Djokovic *
Djokovic has a great chance at 0-15 after pushing Federer back but he punts a backhand long. The Swiss is the man under pressure at the moment, though, and he steers an awkward-looking forehand wide for 15-40. Two break points for Djokovic... but two backhands go wide. Federer then nets a backhand after Djokovic cracks a return at his feet, break point number three... and NoDjo guides a forehand pass down the line past the flailing Fed. It's the second set all over again.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 1-3 Djokovic
Djokovic looks crestfallen when he slices a backhand into the net at 40-15 but he takes the game with a decent serve on the next point. To be honest, he looks exhausted, but he's in charge in this set.

Twitter
Times correspondent Neil Harman on twitter: "Novak comes back once more, a break up in the 4th. Fascinasting tennis, absolutely top drawer."

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 1-2 Djokovic *
Djokovic wins a great point at 30-30 after being drawn into the net, taking it with a smash, and it's break point... and Federer gives him the whole court to aim at, which he gratefully accepts by firing a cross-court backhand into the space. Five-setter?

* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 1-1 Djokovic
A nice hold for Djokvic, no drama.

Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 1-0 Djokovic *
Some dicey moments for Federer at the start of the fourth but he recovers from 0-30 to take the game.

Switzerland
* Federer 7-5 1-6 7-5 Djokovic
Federer opens up his shoulders and cracks a big forehand for 0-15, and then swipes a beauty of a backhand down the line for 0-30. The crowd are up for this now. A lengthy rally follows before Djokovic twitches first and flattens a forehand into the middle of the net. It's 0-40 and three set points for Federer... and NoDjo smacks a forehand long under pressure. Big celebration from Rog.

Federer 7-5 1-6 6-5 Djokovic *
Djokovic smacks his head with his racket after a wayward forehand puts Federer 30-15 up, and the Swiss comes through to hold.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 5-5 Djokovic
Djokovic holds to love. Rafa said after his match that he would watch this one - he must be loving it.

Hawkeye
Federer 7-5 1-6 5-4 Djokovic *
Djokovic has a sniff at 0-15 but puts a forehand just wide and looks furious with himself. Federer thinks he's hit a winning serve at 30-15 but Hawkeye says no, and Rog then belts his second serve long. Big point at 30-30, and Federer comes up with a huge forehand and a "C'mon!" Novak smacks the sole of his shoe in frustration and the game is soon gone.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 4-4 Djokovic
Federer continues to wallop nearly everything into the net and Djokovic strolls through another service game. It's about now you would expect Rog to step it up and Nole to maybe get nervous, but no sign of either yet.

Federer 7-5 1-6 4-3 Djokovic *
Federer misses a mid-court forehand and goes desperately close to the line with a smash. Djokovic has a chance at 15-15 but sticks a short forehand in the net and Federer comes through.

Twitter

It would appear that Tarango is out of luck as Lady Gaga's Poker Face rings around the arena. Djokovic hooks a forehand wide on the first point as Federer rushes the net but a very sharp backhand volley helps him to 30-15, and Federer is still struggling to find any rhythm as successive forehands find the net.

Federer 7-5 1-6 3-2 Djokovic *
Yep, manual refresh time again to correct the score (long day). Federer holds, honest.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 2-2 Djokovic
Federer plays a brilliant volley and a heavy forehand winner but it's still Djokovic who gets to game point first at 40-30, and the Swiss nets a backhand.

Federer 7-5 1-6 2-1 Djokovic *
Federer leans back and creams a forehand down the line early in the game, and a nifty bit of serve-volley seals it. The PA announcer then asks what song the crowd would like to listen to. Jeff Tarango on 5 live sports extra wants Eye of the Tiger. This does not come as a surprise.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 1-1 Djokovic
Djokovic wins a lengthy opening point when Federer floats a backhand long, and the third seed takes the game soon after with a sharp wrong-footing volley.

Federer 7-5 1-6 1-0 Djokovic *
Djokovic gives his racket the gentlest of treatment after missing with a return at 30-30, and Federer takes the game with a sweeping cross-court forehand.

* Federer 7-5 1-6 Djokovic
Djokovic serves it out easily and takes the set in 21 minutes. Rog must have given that one up by the end, interesting to see who comes out firing first in the third.

Federer 7-5 1-5 Djokovic *
Federer nets a forehand for 15-30 and he's really out of sorts at the moment, but a couple of loose ones from Djokovic let the Swiss off the hook. Federer opens the door again with a drop shot at 40-30 that doesn't come off, and the five-time champion then fails to chase down a drop shot from his opponent. Break point.... and Federer nets a backhand! Very odd, and NoDjo has the double break.

* Federer 7-5 1-4 Djokovic
Djokovic holds easily and, well though the Serb is doing, Federer is currently way below the level he found against Soderling in the quarter-finals.

Federer 7-5 1-3 Djokovic *
Federer gets on the board in this set but his first-serve percentage is down at 42% and he's made 19 unforced errors, neither of which are helping him much.

From Lydian on 606: "Weird flow of match so far, you feel Nole needs to grasp the match mentally and be bold/aggressive. Fed is alittle inconsistent on groundies but then he's taking the ball earlier and earlier these days so timing has to be perfect all the time."

* Federer 7-5 0-3 Djokovic
This time Djokovic does manage to build on the break of serve with a hold to 15 and Federer has gone off the boil for now.

Federer 7-5 0-2 Djokovic *
All looks well in Federer world at 40-30 but a couple of errors hand Djokovic a break point... and the world number three comes up with a magnificent backhand winner. And Novak's smiling face can be seen proudly displayed across his father's chest in the stands.

So is history about to repeat itself, another straight-sets win for Federer over Djokovic in New York? The Serbian gets off to a decent start in the second set with a hold.

Switzerland
Federer 7-5 Djokovic *
Djokovic plays a great first point and takes it with a backhand down the line, but Federer comes storming into the net and forces the Serb just long. An ace and a service winner take Federer to two set points... Djokovic saves the first with a backhand return winner, Federer converts the second with a forehand drive-volley.

* Federer 6-5 Djokovic
Federer opens up with a running forehand winner and then draws Djokovic into a backhand error with some heavy slice. Djoko goes wide for 0-40 and it's three break points to Federer... and Djokovic puts a backhand long. A bit of a tame effort there from NoDjo.

Federer 5-5 Djokovic *
Federer fires down a big second serve out wide at 30-30 and Djokovic then goes long with a forehand return and it's as tight as could be right now.

* Federer 4-5 Djokovic
A dodgy Djokovic drop shot allows Federer an easy winner early in the game but from 30-30 Djokovic takes charge on serve.

Federer 4-4 Djokovic *
Federer is into the net for a volley at 30-15 and then seals the game with a big serve - more clinical play there from the Swiss.

* Federer 3-4 Djokovic
We've seen it all fortnight but breaking is one thing, holding is another. Djokovic is in danger at 30-30 and double faults for the first time today. Federer plays a brilliant backhand down the line and follows it in to stick away the drive-volley. Great stuff.

Federer 2-4 Djokovic *
Manual refresh required - first meltdown of Super Saturday, apologies. Federer's first serve goes walkabout and Djokovic takes full advantage to get to 0-40 and three break points... ace on the first one, controversy on the second. Rog looks like he's won the point but NoDjo is disturbed by the line judge slipping and gets a let. Federer is not happy. Ace. One more chance for Djokovic and he plays a brilliant backhand volley.

* Federer 2-3 Djokovic
Great hitting from both men as Djokovic more than holds his own in another tight game and we have a real contest on here, as it should be between the world numbers two and three.

Federer 2-2 Djokovic *
Federer looks as cool as you like when he rolls into the net for 40-0 but Djokovic keeps him on his toes with a winner up the line. Federer decides he's had enough of that and hammers a forehand winner to take the game.

* Federer 1-2 Djokovic
The pressure switches quickly to the Djokovic serve as Federer steps in and starts swinging. Break point... and it's looking good for the five-time champion until he catches the tape with a forehand. Djokovic holds. Don't forget, UK users can access 5 live sports extra coverage through the link on this page. A manual refresh will even change it to 'Federer v Djokovic'.

Federer 1-1 Djokovic *
Federer nets twice for 0-30, powers away a forehand into the corner and then shanks one into the tramlines. Two break points... NoDjo mishits a backhand on the first, a big forehand and smash do it for Rog on the second. The Swiss holds.

It's bad news for a Briton
2001: Some disappointing news from Court 11, where Youth Olympics champions Oli Golding of Britain and Czech Jiri Vesely have lost 6-1 7-5 to Peru's Duilio Beretta and Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador.

1955: I don't know where you think you're going, we've got Roger Federer v Novak Djokovic to come in a few minutes' time. Rog has beaten Novak in New York for the last three years running and leads their head-to-head 10-5, but Djokovic can take hope from his very narrow defeat to Federer in Toronto last month and in their last six matches they're 3-3.

1945: "For me it's a dream to play in the final for the first time in the biggest centre court in the world," says Rafael Nadal. "I worked very hard to get here. And thank you very much, you make it feel like home here. My serve was very important and maybe he was a little bit more tired than me, he played a lot of long matches. One thing I want to say, this is a very special day for everybody here. I just want to say my support for the victims of 9/11 and their families."

Spain
Nadal 6-2 6-3 6-4 Youzhny
Nadal prepares to serve for a place in his first US Open final, the gravity of the situation encapsulated by Chaka Khan warbling I Feel For You over the PA. Nadal takes charge with the forehand again, raining down blows with Youzhny reeling behind the baseline like a man on the ropes. A big serve then takes Nadal to 40-0 and three match points... And Nadal takes it with a serve before leaping into the air. That was a big celebration even for Rafa. So he's through to the final without dropping a set. Can anyone stop him? Well, maybe...

* Nadal 6-2 6-3 5-4 Youzhny
A few boos ring out when Nadal decides to jog to his chair and change rackets just as Youzhny is ready to serve. The Spaniard comes out firing, upping the aggression after a leisurely half hour or so, and whips a forehand down the line for 15-30. Youzhny responds with an ace for 30-30 but then double faults. Break point... and Nadal saves it with a good serve. A wayward backhand then sees Nadal punch the strings of his racket al la Andy Murray. He gets a reprieve when Youzhny decides to serve volley and clips the tape with a very makeable high-backhand volley. Break point number two... and Nadal takes it with a couple of massive forehands, punching his chest in celebration.

Charlize Theron, Gene Wilder, Tony Bennett, Tommy Hilfiger - a decent bunch of celebs in today. They could with a Cliff or a Whitfield, but not bad. Celebs or not, the whole crowd comes alive when two good Youzhny forehands earn the Russian a break point... and he takes it! A great rally finished off at the net with a smash gets the world number 14 pumped and back in the match, and the crowd love it.

* Nadal 6-2 6-3 4-3 Youzhny
Youzhny holds to 15. Not much to add. Still no sign of any spaghetti legs or a killer angel.

Nadal 6-2 6-3 4-2 Youzhny *
Youzhny hits a nice forehand winner down the line for 15-15 but Nadal responds with two big serves - it's like going back to the days of Sampras - and he's nearly there. The debate on 5 live sports extra has moved on to where victory on Sunday will put the Spaniard in the all-time list. Near the top, if that helps.

* Nadal 6-2 6-3 3-2 Youzhny
Youzhny responds with a comfortable hold and we seem to be drifting to an inevitable conclusion. Time for Mikhail to try something different, maybe a Bruce Grobbelaar spaghetti legs move when waiting to return.

Nadal 6-2 6-3 3-1 Youzhny *
Nadal eases through another service game, no problemo.

* Nadal 6-2 6-3 2-1 Youzhny
Youzhny swings a backhand well wide and finds himself at 0-30, but a brilliant wrong-footing forehand helps him back to 30-30. The pressure just becomes too much though and an error (although you couldn't call it unforced) gives Nadal break point... and Youzhny goes wide with the forehand. Novak, Rog, get your gear on.... And if you're one of those shallow types for whom text commentary is not enough, we have pictorial evidence that this match is actually happening and I'm not just making it up in our photo gallery.

Nadal 6-2 6-3 Youzhny *
Nadal opens up with another poor drop shot - he hasn't found his range on them at all today - but two Youzhny errors pull him back to 30-15 and the Spaniard then hits an ace. Two sets points... and a service winner does it.

* Nadal 6-2 5-3 Youzhny
Youzhny is scrambling hard at 0-15 and gets his chance with a drive-volley, but it's a tricky one and Hawkeye shows he went just long. Nadal then plays a brilliant defensive rally, throwing up a backhand lob when the point seems lost and getting it over Youzhny. Moments later the Russian sticks a forehand in the tramlines and it's three break points... Sheesh. Nadal steps in and absolutely cracks a forehand return down the line for a winner. Fortunately for Youzhny he's 40-0 up at the time. A double fault adds a few more jitters but Nadal smacks a backhand return into the net and it's game Youzhny.

Or even a killer angle. Killer Angel sounds like a bad film. Youzhny is in trouble at 30-30 when a mid-court ball sits up invitingly for Nadal but the Spaniard unexpectedly blasts long. After failing to convert a couple of game points Youzhny rather bravely calls "Challenge!" when a floated Nadal return lands close to the baseline. The Russian doesn't look convinced but Hawkeye backs his judgement. Good call. And a manual refresh will give UK users the chance to enter the magical world of 5 live sports extra. After an encouraging start to the match, Youzhny goes long to fall 0-40 down and face three set points.... Nadal nets a forehand on the first but hooks a fabulous cross-court forehand past the Russian at the net on the second. Youzhny played pretty well in that set and got broken twice. Ominous.

Nadal 5-2 Youzhny *
Youzhny is making Nadal work for these service games. The Spaniard holds to 30 but is given the runaround early on and blazes one forehand wide as he tries to finish a rally early.

Greg Rusedski on twitter: "Nadal, federer both going to win, but fed v djok could be great match "

* Nadal 4-2 Youzhny
A beautiful sweeping backhand down the line gets Youzhny to 30-15 - it may not as pretty as Gasquet's single-hander but it's more effective these days. The Russian then double faults for the first time today but serves his way out of trouble.

Nadal 4-1 Youzhny *
Nadal has dropped just one point on serve when he moves to 40-0 but then gets a little sloppy and Youzhny comes storming back, making it deuce by chasing down a dodgy Rafa volley. The world number one earns game point with a thumping forehand and a "Vamos!" but Youzhny pegs him back with a an improvised backhand that loops over Nadal at the net. The Russian then plays a brilliant point from the baseline, moving Nadal around and finishing him off with a drop shot. Break point Youzhny... but Nadal swings a serve out wide for deuce and comes through. Tough old game that.

Hawkeye
* Nadal 3-1 Youzhny
Youzhny cracks first with a couple of wayward forehands to slip break point down.... and Nadal takes it with a heavy, looping topspin forehand that just catches the line. Youzhny goes to Hawkeye but no luck for the Russian.

From Pickles91 on 606: "Hope Youzhny gets a couple of tie breakers, he's back in the top 10 now. Quite a tournament he's had. Nadal in the day time... maybe maybe the sun will destroy Rafa's game, if not it'll be over pretty quickly."

Nadal 2-1 Youzhny *
Nadal finally wins the opening point with a whipped cross-court forehand but Youzhny is battling away in defence behind the baseline. The first point goes against serve when Nadal hits a forehand long for 30-15 but he sees out the game easily enough.

* Nadal 1-1 Youzhny
Youzhny starts well with a love hold of his own, and we should remember that he's been here before, losing to Andy Roddick in the 2006 semi-final.

From alexduff1 via twitter: "Gorgeous day here! Redeye to NYC from SF, just made it to the tennis center in time. Looking forward to two great matches!"

Nadal 1-0 Youzhny *
If the first point is anything to go by we're in for a cracker. Nadal pounds away on the forehand but Youzhny almost takes it with a scrambled defensive backhand that floats just long. The Spaniard does not risk any more messing about as he holds to love, finishing at the net with a forehand volley/smash.

1727: Nadal to serve.....

The sun is out
1721: Nadal is sporting his daytime luminous yellow/green top today while Youzhny is sticking with the blue that has seen him this far. Although hopefully not the same t-shirt he spent four hours in against Wawrinka. It seems like there's the traditional Flushing Meadows breeze out there but I haven't seen a single towel flying across the court yet - a beautiful day.

1716: So first up we have world number one Nadal against world number 14 Youzhny. No contest, surely? Well, the Russian has won four of his 11 matches against Nadal, which is pretty good going, including a quarter-final win in New York four years ago and an extraordinary 6-0 6-1 victory over the Spaniard in Chennai two years ago. Nadal.... well, he's won eight Grand Slams, hasn't he? And here they come into the sunlit Arthur Ashe Stadium, an unusual experience for Rafa this fortnight after four night matches.

1714: We have a long night ahead of us and will need to stick together if we're to get through in one piece - send me your thoughts via Twitter, 606 or text on 81111 (UK) or 44 7786200666 (worldwide) with TENNIS before your message

1710: Afternoon everyone. We all know why we're here so I'll cut to the chase: Nadal v Youzhny, Federer v Djokovic, Clijsters v Zvonareva. Choose your moments for comfort breaks very carefully over the next 10 hours or so.
