By Piers Newbery

0405: That's your lot for tonight, but it's only 12 hours until the quarter-finals get under way and we'll be back at 1600 BST for Andy Mu... Stanislas Wawrinka v Sam Querrey, followed by Francesca Schiavone v Venus Williams. The night session at midnight (UK) will feature Sam Stosur v Kim Clijsters, and the all-Spanish battle, Rafael Nadal v Feliciano Lopez. Hasta pronto.

0404: "Melzer was really in it at 4-4 in the second set tie-break but Federer got a net-cord - rotten luck for the Austrian," says Jonathan Overend on 5 live.

The match is over
0359: There we have it, Roger Federer beats Jurgen Melzer 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 without really getting out of second gear. It's Robin Soderling next for the five-time champ, which should prove a much tougher test. I know who my money's on, mind.

0351: It's hardly Murray-Wawrinka but there a few twists and turns in this one. Federer finds himself break point down three times, saving the first with an ace before Melzer nets a return on the second and a backhand on the third. Fearless hitting from Federer under pressure though, and he's one game away at two sets and 5-2.

0345: That looks like curtains for Jurgen. He lets a 40-0 lead slip and Federer snaffles the break with a bullying backhand straight at the stranded Austrian. The Swiss leads 4-2 in the third.

Caroline Wozniacki on Twitter: "Goodnight guys! Will try to get some sleep! Talk to you all tomorrow!"

0338: Federer is in a bit of trouble at 0-30 and then fires a forehand over the baseline for 15-40, and Melzer has two break points. Federer moves into the net as if on casters and angles away a backhand volley before a big serve makes it deuce. Another break point is saved with a serve before Melzer gets a golden chance on break point four but can only find the tramlines. Federer holds for 3-2.

Matt, Blackburn, via text: "Gwen Stefani looks bored to tears. Can I have her ticket to sit in Federer's box next time? Relieve her of the burden that is watching the master at work?"

0322: Oh, Jurgen. This is the way it works for you. A brief altercation with the umpire over the state of the balls sees him throw a bit of a wobbler and Federer is soon 0-40 up, converting his second break point with a terrific backhand into the corner. Third set, 1-1.

0322: We have another "C'maaawwwnn!"" and this time it has an Austrian accent. Melzer breaks at the start of the third set to give himself a fighting chance. I hope Gwen was concentrating because Gav will want to know what happened.

Switzerland
0318: A bug interrupts play at 4-4 and, presumably unrelated, Federer then gets his second dead net-cord of the tie-break to move 5-4 ahead. Melzer looks to the night sky in despair, Federer rolls through the next two points and yells "Cooommmee onnnn!!!!" He leads 6-3 7-6 (7-4), Rossdale heads for a comfort break, so do I. Not together, you understand.

0312: A shank from Federer, a miss from Melzer... they change round at 3-3.

0308: Federer holds easily, tie-break time....

From Lucy via text: "I remember watching the wimbledon final where Federer lost to Rafa watched by the aforementioned Stefani and Rossdale - Ms Stefani didn't really show any interest in the game and actually looked quite bored. The things us women do for our men eh."
Troopers, the lot of you.

0305: Things look a little dicey for Melzer at 5-5, 15-30 but he comes up with a fine wrong-footing volley, a big serve and a scrambled forehand pass to guarantee himself at least a tie-break.

saamFG on Twitter: "Melzer showing impressive fight in this second set but can he keep it up?"

0257: Federer is all business as he swiftly gets himself back to 4-4, moving in threateningly at every opportunity and throwing in one deft drop shot as he holds to love.

Boris Becker
Boris Becker is barely recognisable without a cricket jumper
0252: Great news! Boris Becker is in tonight, the 1989 champion sporting a relatively demure yellow shirt and dark blazer. He saves all the best gear for SW19. I hope the the Wimbledon Mole is reading this, he missed Boris desperately this summer. What's that? The tennis? It's 3-3. I've just realised I spent five minutes cutting a picture of Boris Becker instead of Cameron Diaz....

Twitter
0246: Some boos ring around the stadium for local baseball fella Alex Rodriguez. I thought Wayne Rooney had turned up for a minute. Federer and Melzer remain unmoved by the commotion and serve is dominating right now, the Austrian leading 3-2 in the second set, although Rog disappoints the crowd when he chases down a lob but chooses not to go for the hot dog/tweener.

sssssarah on Twitter: "Looks more like the Chelsea away (Fed) and Leicester City (Melzer) kits from here. Last three head to heads were Chelsea wins."

A celeb has been spotted
0232: Melzer is getting his chances here, no doubt, another two break points coming along at 15-40 but he misses with a backhand up the line before Federer swipes a magnificent backhand cross-court for deuce. Federer fans Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale are in the house this evening. The only time I ever see Gavin Rossdale is when he's watching Federer. Anyway, it's 1-1.

From Max via text: "Just for info: Current wind speed a southerly 14 mph, temp 73F/23C and Humidity 61%."
Thank heavens you texted.

Switzerland
0222: Sheesh. Melzer double faults at 15-30 and then does his best to withstand a barrage of Federer forehands at the net, but to no avail. Federer gets the break back and new coach Paul Annacone sits impassively in the stands. I imagine he's thinking up something to tell Rog in their next practice session. Quick as a flash, Rog serves out the set 6-3 and wipes away some imaginary sweat on his way back to the chair.

0216: Hello. Melzer steps up the aggression on the returns and gets to 15-40 and two break points. Federer saves the first with a big serve-big forehand combo but the Austrian blasts another heavy return on the second and we're back on serve, Rog still leading 4-3.

5 live's Jonathan Overend on Twitter: "A night for an extra layer here in NYC, gets quite cool when the sun goes down."
Tune in to 5 live sports extra (UK only) on Tuesday evening for commentary after the cricket.

Switzerland
0207: Melzer misses a smash to fall 0-40 down. Big trouble, but he valiantly battles back to deuce before a deep Federer return seals the break for 3-1. I can add that Jurgen's father, Rudolf, is the mayor of Deutsch-Wagram and he claims to support Bayern Munich, despite the signal his current clothing is sending out.

From Paul, Sutton, via text: "Massive Roger fan here, but also a hardcore Chelsea supporter. With Melzer wearing that Strip im a little confused about who i should be supporting. Help!"
Let's say Jurgen is Chelsea and Roger is West Ham and see how that works out on Saturday.

0156: I say black, Federer is of course wearing his dark blue outfit that has a naval look about it to me. He wallops down an ace on the first point and is back at the chair sipping something in a trice, 1-0.

0148: Here they are, Rog in his customary black attire and Jurgen wearing what appears to be a Chelsea kit. Judging by the flapping of shirts it's another windy one on Ashe.

From Gary via text: "A pity Serena Wms is injured it would have been interesting to see if the in-form Wozniaki could have beaten her. As it is, I still believe she will get to and maybe win the final. Any thoughts?"
I think a fit Serena would still win three of the four Slams most times. My pick for this event was Clijsters but I have to say that Wozniacki was really impressive today and looks ready. There you go.

0138: ".....to shiiiininiiing seeaaaaaaa..." I return from kettle duty to see a young local giving it her all with the US national them, which can only mean we're about ready for Roger Federer v Jurgen Melzer. Rog won their only previous meeting at Wimbledon this year, losing just eight games along the way, but Jurg is having the year of his life. Tricky, lefty, athletic, experienced..... straight sets?

The match is over
0128: The end when it comes is mercifully swift. Vera Zvonareva wins 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals where she will face Kaia Kanepi, the 31st seed from Estonia. It's a considerably better result than last year's fourth round when the Russian squandered six match points before losing to Flavia Pennetta. I'm still blushing now from some of the language she used after that one...

0126: After a fairly tortuous game in which Zvonareva sees a match point slip away, Petkovic breaks back to trail 5-2 in the second set. I'd like to say it had electrified the atmosphere but, to be honest, it's more a case of prolonging the agony.

0121: "I'm so lucky that I am the face of adidas and Stella McCartney and I have my own special line that no one else is wearing," says Caroline Wozniacki. "I think that's really nice. For me it's important to feel good on court and of course to look good. Then I can focus on my tennis at 100%." But isn't the dress a bit short? "I think it's nice. I'm definitely am sure I'll get a lot of male fans now." Fair enough.

From Nathan in bournemouth via text: "As for famous estonian sports people, the only ones that i can think of, off the top of my head are the former derby county goalkeeper mart poom. And the brilliantly name decathlete erki nool."

0105: Bad days, we all have them. Yesterday I had a potentially fatal nosebleed on a train followed by a heated exchange with an employee of Transport for London. Fortunately, there weren't thousands of people watching me disintegrate. Not so for Petkovic, who double faults to fall 4-0 behind in the second set.

Someone is having a tantrum
0101: "Come ooonnnnn!!!!" Petkovic lets it all out after winning her first notable exchange of the night with a big forehand for deuce. Moments earlier she'd been smacking her racket on the ground in anger at unforced error number 18. Zvonareva remains unruffled and sees out the game to lead by a set and 3-0.

0053: Petkovic is playing in the last 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career while Zvonareva has managed it three times this year alone, and the gap is currently cavernous. The Russian breaks for 2-0 in the second set.

Text in your views on 81111
From Jon in Cumbria via text: "Not to be judgemental but one of the ball boys in the PetZvon match looks to be at least in his 40s...Is he lost?"
The loose application of the term "ballboy/girl" is one of joys of the US Open. You see some right characters...

0047: "Just spoke to Kaia Kanepi, who I think might well have Estonia's sports personality of the year award sewn up after that result," says Reuters journalist Matt Majendie. "Off the top of my head, I'm not sure who her rivals are...?!"

0045: Well, Petkovic has made 12 unforced errors, mostly on the forehand side, as she loses the first set 6-1 in a little over 20 minutes. Good stuff from Zvonareva but the German is having a shocker.

0041: Maria Sharapova is asked about the 36 unforced errors she made in defeat by Caroline Wozniacki, with the Dane making just 10. "Even with those unforced errors, I still had my chances and I was one-for-eight on breakpoints," says the Russian. "Against someone that's playing really well, playing with a lot of confidence, it's really important to take those chances that you have, the very few that come your way. I felt like I played a couple of good points and then made an easy error, hit a return long or miss a first serve, give her many looks at second serve returns."

0037: Hmmm, 4-0 now to Zvonareva with a sweeping cross-court backhand and it could be Melzertime soon everyone. The WTA inform me that there will be eight different nations represented in the women's quarter-finals and the last time that happened was at the 1994 US Open. None of those nations are Great Britain, by the way.

From Patrick in London via text: "If all goes to logical plan, does it mean that Fed would have to beat Sod, Novak and Rafa to win the title if he gets past Melzer? If so, tough ask even for Fed...."
That's what Fed is looking at - he's got a great record against Soderling and Djokovic.

From Glen from west yorkshire via text: "So Piers what's your predo for the Pet\Zvon match."
Zvonareva in straight sets (and that's got nothing to do with the fact that she's leading 3-0).

0025: Bad news for Petkovic fans - she's dropped serve in the opening game, good news - I've found the video of her dancing after beating Petrova last week. Loving the pistol sign-off, although not sure we'll be seeing it again tonight. Zvonareva leads 2-0.

0020: Petkovic and Zvonareva are knocking up on Ashe, the German wearing a pink number, the Russian in tracksuit bottoms, fleece, hat, gloves and carrying a flask. Well, tracksuit bottoms and a fleece. The pair have never played each other before, and Zvonareva should hold the edge as the world number eight and recent Wimbledon finalist. Petkovic is ranked 38 and is one hell of a dancer. More of that later....

The match is over
0011: After pounding away with a series earth-shuddering forehands, Robin Soderling beats Albert Monatnes 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3 to set up a quarter-final with Roger Federer. Or Jurgen Melzer.

0004: If you fancy getting a different view of the leading women players then have a look at this video starring Serena, Clijsters, Jankovic, Dementieva, Zvonareva, Stosur & Azarenka. It's all very glamorous and I am the perfect man to talk you through each of the outfits if required, although quite what tonight's star Zvonareva has got on is beyond me.

0002: So we're not far away from the start of the night session and it's the women kicking things off tonight, with Andrea Petkovic v Vera Zvonareva. I'm slightly bemused to the thinking behind this being the showpiece match of the day - bemused, but not disappointed, because Petkovic is quite a character and Zvonareva is not one to hide her emotions on court.

2355: A dreamy drop shot suggests Montanes isn't done for here but big Rob chases down a volley and swipes an incredible forehand down the line. Montanes double faults twice at deuce - his seventh and eighth of the day - and Soderling eventually takes advantage when the Spaniard whacks a forehand long. The Swede is two sets to one and 3-2 up with a break.

JasonLtd on Twitter: "No one is talking about Venus? Surely a mistake? "

From jack in west ilsley via text: "Um piers did you just assume that federer will be in the next round you of all people should know that you cant do that."
Key phrase there was 'should they meet', Jack. Although if Melzer beats Federer I'm going to go out and buy an especially handsome hat and eat it.

2335: "OK, Albert, you've had your fun but for you - the US Open is over." I imagine that is pretty much what Soderling muttered to Montanes at the changeover after breaking serve again and taking the set soon after. The Swede leads 4-6 6-3 6-2. So who thinks Super Rob could trouble Federer in the next round, should they meet?

From Jake in Halifax via text: "Don't think my teachers will be too impressed with me sleeping through my lessons on the 2nd day of school, but will be totally worth it to watch the FedExpress play! What a magician with a tennis racket!"

2327: The natural order of things seems to have been restored on Louis Armstrong Stadium as Soderling breaks for 3-2 in the third set after a Montanes backhand floats long. And a cheeky manual refresh will remove the lingering aftertaste of Ashenden from this live text.

2322: I'm with you, brother. Twenty four hours ago I was sitting here waiting for a Murray fightback that never came. There's been a lot said about the British number one in the intervening hours and it's time to move on, but hopefully we'll get an update from the man himself soon to clear a things up. In the meantime, what about Wozniacki eh? She looked like a real contender for the time today, no?

Twitter
gobansko on Twitter: "Still in shock :("

2320: Evening all. Montanes leads Soderling 2-1 in the third set, we've got Petkovic v Zvonareva to come at midnight and then Federer v Melzer. Kettle.... on.

By Mark Ashenden

2315: Right folks, Soderling's 0-1 down in the third set and serving and the big matches under the floodlights are less than an hour away. What better time to hand over all duties to the unflappable Piers Newbery to see you through til the end of the night? Thanks for the memories. Thank you for all your comments. You've all been as efficient as Wozniacki's back-hand and as lively as a Monfils service game. See you all Wednesday. Night.

2310: In about 50 minutes, Zvonareva will take on Petkovic on Ashe. And then it's Roger the lodger. I only call him that because it rhymes. Roger the old codger would seem a little harsh right now. The second-seeded Swiss faces Melzer. How do you see that one going? Any hope for the Austrian?

Matt in Blackburn, via text 81111: "You never published my message but I would like to point out I was 1 game too generous to Sharapova, that's all. 6-4 6-4 I said. I thank you"
If you think that sort of text will encourage me to publish your latest comment Matt then I have to tell you that I'm not quite the push-over monkey you clearly think I am. Unbelievable.

2304: Soderling fans can take a big sigh of relief. He has turned it around. The Swede leads 5-2 in the second set after losing the opener against Montanes.

Twitter
Harpmaster100 on Twitter: "Terrific second set of tennis. Brilliantly played Wozniacki. On this evidence she'll take some stopping."
Speaking off court, Wozniacki says she's playing the best tennis of her career. Woz made the quarters at Roland Garros this year and will be desperate to go one better than her runner-up spot last year at Flushing Meadows.

2255: In front of her parents, Wozniacki is beaming. The top seed says: "Maria's a great player and I knew it wouldn't be easy. I got a lot of experience from last year and it helped me. I'm so happy to make the quarter-finals. My dad [her coach] is my biggest supporter and without him I wouldn't be at the level I am at today."

2251: Sharapova's eyes point towards the sky - she needs divine intervention now as she faces two match points. Woz is all smiles as she finishes off Sharapova. It's her first victory over the Russian. Any doubters remaining about the number one seed? Few fireworks but she always gets the ball back. Impressive stuff. Woz will now play Cibulkova for a place in the semis.

2247: A brilliant rally leaves both players using their Mr Tickle arms to return in an incredible rally and Sharapova digs something out to get it back to her ADV. Fantastic from the 2006 US Open champion. I mentioned she was throwing the kitchen sink at Woz. Well, Wozzy had the sink, lawnmower, sofa and CD collection thrown at her Danish head in that game. 5-4 to Wozzy and serving for the match. It'll be sad for this one to end so soon. Any more surprises left?

2243: Match point to Wozniacki....

Text in your views on 81111
Marco in Hong Kong, via text 81111: "Tennis power and grace combined in a unique blend. Wozniacki is really fun to watch, hope she wins this"

2240: The tale of this match. Errors. Mistakes. Call them what you will but Sharapova has effectively messed up 29 times compared to Wozzy's nine. If she loses this, she'll be lying in bed tonight shaking her Russian locks with massive frustration I would think. Back to the court. Stranger things have happened....comeback queen Maria? Would be nice to see three sets.

2236: The great Dane? That's surely been used before. Wozniacki takes advantage of Sharapova's ninth double-fault and she's closing in on a comprehensive win at 4-3 - although strangely, it doesn't seem that comprehensive. Is that harsh or fair do you think? I'm a little befuddled. She holds serve to lead 5-3. C'mon Maria - anything left in that Russian tank?

Pickles91 on 606: "Soderling not looking great at the moment. Everything just seems to be heading towards a Rafa Roger final... Haven't had one of them for a long long time."

Spain
2230: Soderling has it all to do as he faces the serve of Montanes with the Spaniard needing one game for the opening set. A possible shock on the cards? And he does it without dropping a point.

2228: Sharapova bags her sixth point in a row but then blazes long. Woz trails 2-3 and is serving. Tense times. Woz takes a rare trip up to the net and it works and hits back to take the game. A steady recovery. Woz was wobbling there but hung in. 3-3.

Text in your views on 81111
A Fed fan, via text 81111: "Looking ahead to another comfortable Fed victory. Should he meet Rafa in the final I really think this could go along way to answering the 'greatest player ever' as Rafa has a superior head-to-head against Fed. Could get the Golden Slam and have more slams for his age than Fed did. A long way to go though"
Fededer up against Melzer on Ashe after Zvonareva v Petkovic in the later games.

2222: I think Soderling's been put off by my helicopter's flight path straight over Louis Armstrong. I'm sorry Robin but you can't blame a sloppy service break on me. Yep - the fifth seed is a break down and trails Montanes 3-4. Again - interesting.

2221: Wozzy's record at Flushing Meadows: Made the second round in 2007, fourth round in 2008 and then runner-up last year. Will she go one better at the weekend? She's got to see off Sharapova tonight first. Sharaps picking up a few loose serves from the Dane and it's deuce. Every game's a big one right now. Woz finds the baseline with a crushing forehand and she's got the ADV. Deuce again. Sharapova does it again - goes for a massive back-hand and hands the game and initiative back to Woz. 2-2.

Ben in Sussex, via text 81111: "I saw Wozniacki play at Eastbourne at 14 and met her the following year and told anyone who would listen that she would be world no.1 by 23! God how I wish I had gambled at that age!!"
Three years early. Is that a bad forecast or just ahead of her time?

2211: A break point for Sharaps after a glorious drop shot. Wozzy left stunned but she stays in the next rally brilliantly as Sharapova tries everything but it goes back to deuce. Big game this one. A few 'moon balls' on offer from both players but Wozzy moves up a gear to fire down a winner. Brilliant. Sharapova fires one in to the net, it dribbles over off the tape and Woz chases the ball into the net and stays in the point and Sharapova lobs but wastes it as Woz falls to the ground with the ball flying long. Circus entertainment. Had everything that rally. But Woz hangs on. 1-1. Magical stuff and the crowd are loving it. I'm loving it.

2205: Sharapova nabs a mammoth opening game but the Russian will have to cut out the errors to get back into this match. Eight double-faults so far. 23 unforced errors. 15 winners though and she's playing aggressively - she's come into the net 10 times compared to Wozzy's two times. But Maria - keep it steady and you might have a chance. I'm no coach but she's trying too hard to force the winner me thinks.

2200: My court-scanning helicopter whizzes back into action and I've spotted a big Swede winding his serve up on Louis Armstrong. Any guesses? The boy Soderling of course who starts his fourth round match with yet another Spaniard Albert Montanes. Fifth seed (I couldn't bring myself to say fifth seed Swede) up against the 21st seed. Winner of that clash will play Melzer or Federer. Feds up later tonight. Who's staying up then?

2155: I've got to mention a top effort from Irish junior boy Sam Barry who has overcome American Nick Chappell in the first round 6-1 6-3.

Jas, via text 81111: "This is a match between two women heavyweights. I think whoever wins this will win the women's title this year."

Latest scores
2150: Wozniacki is serving for the first set at 5-3. It goes to deuce and the Dane opens up her body to fire one down past Sharapova's toes. Set point. Sharapova seems to be flipping between second gear and sixth while Wozniacki is bumping along in fourth. It's working though. A gruelling rally ends with Sharapova going long and it's first blood to the number one seed. 6-3. Winner of this plays Cibulkova (earlier winner over Kuznetsova).

2144: PLEASE MANUALLY REFRESH. My over-eager digits have created havoc trying to put links in for BBC Radio 5 live sports extra. Apologies. Which leads me to mention that you can listen to the Wozzy and Sharapova match on Radio 5 live sports extra. So there.

2142: A fabulous turnaround. You lose the first set with a bagel in 36 minutes and you'd think it would be an early bath. How wrong could we all be? VERY VERY wrong. Wickmayer wins the first set 6-0 against Kanepi, loses the next on a tie-break and then falls to pieces as the Estonian 31st seed wins the decider 6-1. Brilliant effort for the 25-year-old who made the quarters at Wimbledon this year. Her best effort at the US Open was the third round four years ago. She also made the last eight at Roland Garros in 2008.

2132: Wozniacki may be leading 4-2 but her serve is wobbling a little as Sharapova pulls out the kitchen sink in an attempt to break back. She's had four break points and blown them all. Wozzy's famous defence holding firm. It's back to deuce as Sharapova drags one wide. A sixth break point coming up....and Sharapova powers a forehand back and Woz has no chance. It's 4-3 and back on serve again. Great stuff.

2130: Sharapova serves up a box of crackers and she now trails 2-4. The schedule for Tuesday (day 9) has just been released. I wonder what Murray will be doing as his conqueror Stanislas Wawrinka takes on Sam Querrey in the first match on Ashe. Francesca Schiavone and Venus Williams follows. The evening games are Samantha Stosur vs Kim Clijsters, followed by a Spanish showdown - Nadal vs Lopez. Then on Louis Armstrong, Youzhny and Robredo start the day with Ferrer and Verdasco a little later on. It's all about the sizzling Spaniards this year.

Kanepi is leading 3-0 in the deciding set and serving. I ask again. Where's that come from? It's a weird 10 minutes at Flushing Meadows. What other strangeness will happen? An alien craft arriving on court 9 to reveal they've invented this amazing game called 'tennis'. How annoyed would those aliens be?

2119: Honours should have been shared there between Wozzy and Sharapova with the grunting Russian dishing up a masterclass in serving and forehands but then a double in double-faults takes over. Shocking. One of those serves almost hit the baseline. Doh. The top seed leads 3-1. Where did that come from?

Full marks for managing the name Sharapova three times in one text. So you're not rating Wozniacki's chances then I'm thinking?

2048: Wickmayer has a battle on her hands following her beautiful bagel in the first set against Kanepi. It's 5-5 in the second set. Interesting.

2047: Djokovic has a smile wider than the Arthur Ashe court and says: "It was a great performance and probably the best so far in the tournament. I'm pleased I'm playing better and better. Hopefully I can go a step further but the way I'm playing I have a good chance. Monfils is physically one of the strongest on the circuit. I will have to work for my points but the better player will win."

Manc in NY, via text 81111: "Celebrating Labor Day as an exiled Brit by lazing by the pool and wupping my 6 yr old at ping pong. Wife and rest of kids at Flushing Meadow."
Tremendous. You want to know why? Two minutes after the first text, the cocky 'Manc' reveals he's lost 21-7 to his six-year-old. "Time to take up dominos" he adds.

2040: Kuznetsova is not happy she had to play late last night and first on today. She got dumped out by Cibulkova and said: "I just didn't feel good today. I was very flat. It was very hard for me to play one night (the) second night match, and then in one day to play at 11:00. I still have to play and win because I feel that my level is so much better. But I was just fighting with myself and was not doing all the things I was supposed to do. I was doing it right, then I stopped again. Still, it's not an excuse. I still have to win, it doesn't matter how I win. I think she played well, but my level is higher and I have to win these matches."

Feds up later under the lights after midnight BST. The Swiss is up second after Zvonareva.

2036: It's the battle of the blondies up next. Wozniacki up against Sharapova. I'm genuinely looking forward to this one. That Djoko match was a little flat but a fine professional effort from the Serb. Thoughts on Woz v Sharaps?

2034: If Djokovic was flying earlier he is now ummmmm what's better than flying?! He leads 5-1 anyway and Fish is serving to stay in the match. A magical drop shot from Djoko's delicate wrists and he gets it to 15-30. And now he's got two match points. Djokovic senior's t-shirt is flapping wildly in the breeze as his son punches the air after wrapping up a three-set win. 6-3 6-4 6-1. The Serb looks a happy boy as he hurls his sweaty towel into the crowd. So Monfils awaits the third seed in the quarters.

2022: Wickmayer has found her feet again and broken back to lead 3-2 with a break up in the second set after taking the first set against Kanepi in bagel-style.

2021: As things stand, as Americans celebrate Labour Day - do they celebrate Labour Day or just have it? Let me know please. Either way, it looks like in about 20 minutes there will only be one American left in the men's field with Fish on his way out and Sam Querrey up against Murray's conqueror tomorrow - Stanislas Wawrinka.

bgtennisnation on Twitter: "lookin' like Djoker must have had some sushi for dinner last night, as he's got all the answers for Fisherman at the moment."

2014: The American crowd have gone a little quiet on Arthur Ashe. Mardy Fish serves up a double-fault and Djoko grabs the advantage right at the start of the third set. And Djoko then serves up some belters and leads 2-0. He just needs this set.

2011: Wickmayer breaks at the start of the second set and hold on - she's facing a service break point but the Belgian takes it to deuce. BUT a big SHOCK. Kanepi breaks back. Now 1-1. Didn't see that coming. More stats from the WTA - Wickmayer has reached US Open fourth round for 2nd year running. Last year, Wickmayer scored her best Grand Slam result to date advancing to SF at Flushing Meadows. She's bidding to join compatriot Clijsters in QF."

The result is blandness, especially as technology focuses on strength and velocity, rather than accentuating racquet responsiveness."

2002: Fish survives with a battling service game and takes it by storming into the net and smashing it past the over-stretched and helpless Djoko. The Serb will soon be serving for a two-set lead though at 5-4.

1959: As Fish begins serving to stay in the second set against Djokovic, let me throw some stats your way that have landed at my feet from the WTA. It's about the Wickmayer/Kanepi clash. Ready? Kanepi is bidding to reach her 2nd straight Grand Slam QF after 2010 Wimbledon…Shortly after Wimbledon, Kanepi became the first Estonian woman to win a Tour singles title at Palermo. Kanepi has risen up the rankings more than 100 places since May 10, when she was ranked No.140. Kanepi has won four of her last five matches against top 20 players." I don't know whether to apologise, hide my head in shame or send an email to Mr Djokovic senior. If I was Novak I'd have a quiet word I think. Blimey - I've just looked up and you'll never guess who's sitting in the corner of my office with a picture of my face on his t-shirt....

A bagel
1951: Let's get that chopper fired up again and scan the courts. Djoko edges his service game with a flurry of grunts and leads 6-3 4-2. None of the fireworks from the earlier battle between Monfils and Gasquet. Over on Louis Arnstrong, Wickmayer blasts Kanepi away in the first set to get her gnashers wrapped around a juicy bagel. 6-0. The winner of this one will play Petkovic or Zvonareva.

1944: Hold on folks. I'm dreaming. Fish and Djoko at 2-2 in the second set. I look up and I see a guy in the crowd on Arthur Ashe wearing a grey t-shirt with a full drawn picture of Djokovic on the front. Did anybody else just see that? Are my eyes playing tricks with me? I think my coffee was too strong. On a par with jumpers with pictures of dogs on the front. Avoid these people at all costs! Apologies if you're current wearing a picture of a sport star or a labrador on any of your garments right now.

Sounds like a useful story for sure.

1926: Fish opens up the second set with a service win.

1924: Gael Monfils has his chance to express his feelings after beating his French compatriot Gasquet. "It's amazing. I work hard and today was a perfect match. I'm very happy." Monfils will play Fish or Djokovic.

1923: Djoko just a few a serves away from the first set. Fish dishes up a cracking lob to get it to 15-30. Djoko gets the American on the run and breezes into the net and volleys home to have two set points. Easy pickings for the Serb. And game over, set over after 38 minutes. 6-3. Djoko's US Open record? Runner-up in 2007. And semi-finalist in the last two years. He'll be desperate to get his hands on another Slam trophy - he won the Aussie Open in 2008. Any chances for Djoko?

1916: Fish serving to stay in the first set against Djoko at 2-5. Later on, Federer and Zvonareva in action. After this Djoko/Fish match I give you Wozniacki vs Sharapova. Should be a corker. Magnificent Monday no?

1909: American Mardy Fish has had a stinker of a start. Djoko leads 4-1 and big WHOOPS as their boy wins his service game. But that was hard work. 4-2.

1906: After her earlier girls juniors win in the first round, Britain's Laura Robson says: "It was harder than the score suggested. I was working on mixing up my shots more - like serve and volley. I wanted to work on my game more. I'm playing really well and things have improved from last year. I only have 12 tournaments in the seniors in one season so the juniors is a good way of doing that. 1856: Monfils 6-4 7-5 7-5 beats Gasquet. Monfils to play Fish/Djokovic for a place in the semis. A strange start to that one. Djoko breaks to lead 2-1 and then Fish breaks back immediately. How do you see this one going? Reckon Monfils will go all the way?

France
1853: Monfils eyeing a US Open quarter-final spot for the first time. His best Slam achievement is a semi-final at Roland Garros in 2008. His serve begins a little shakily. Is that a word? And now he's got two match points. Big shouts of ALLEZ as his 14th ace fires down to give him the match. MONFIL WINS. Brilliant. Huge cheers on Louis Armstrong and rightfully so.

1850: One minute after having two set points, Gasquet plays the ball into the net and Monfils breaks and he'll be now serving for the match. Phenomenal turnaround.

1848: Gasquet plays an absolute crackerjack of a point that includes a sweet drop shot followed up with a cute volley. Stunning. He's now got two set points. Monfils saves one of them with a brilliant pass that Gasquet can only plant into the net. Monfils then plonks the ball into the corner and it's deuce. Plenty of oohs and arhhhs being dished up by the crowd. A 134mph serve and Monfils has the ADV. Gasquet blows it. Three games in a row and it's 5-5. I'd be surprised if Gasquet can turn it around again - that's a game to rock the inside of his head. Monfils seriously has gone from second gear to fifth. Momentum with the 17th seed.

1841: Over on Arthur Ashe, Fish and Djokovic are warming up their serves ahead of their fourth round clash. Will the third seed ease past the American? Fish has been in cracking form though this week.

1840: Monfils clings on to his service. Gasquet now serving for the third set. And he starts with a double-fault. C'mon Dicky boy. Don't lose your bottle. And he plays a wild one and it goes 0-30. Wobbly Richard. Monfils sniffing a comeback. Gasquet strolls into the net and the ball limps under the tape. Two break points for Monfils and he gets it. Monfils has the serve at 4-5 and he's turned it around again. Another cracking match following the twists and turns of Murray's battle last night.

1833: What's French for "this match has turned on its head"? Richard Gasquet has upped his flowing game and leads Monfils 5-2 in the third set. He needs this set to avoid an exit. Cracking match this one - 134 minutes so far. This could be a long one.

1827: This tournament just keeps giving. Gasquet leads Monfils 3-2 in the third set. Up next on Arthur Ashe? It's Mardy Fish vs Novak Djokovic. Should be a cracker. What are your tea leaves saying about this one?

A shock result
1826: What a belter. Unseeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia makes the quarters with a 7-5 7-6 (7-4) win over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova. Cibulkova will play top seed Caroline Wozniacki or former champion Maria Sharapova for a place in the semi-finals. Woz/Sharaps up after Djoko.

1824: So here we go. Can the Kuz hit back? She's a break down already and trails 1-2 in the tie-break. 3-1 Cibulks. Massive shock on the cards here. She serves well and is 4-1 up. What's Kuz got left in the locker? She's limping out by the looks of it. 2-5 down. Two serves for the match. Does she have the bottle? Kuz gets one back. 3-5. Three match points for Cibulks. Here we go. She's already had two match points. And Kuz saves her third match point. Still battling. KUZNETSOVA is OUT.

1816: Kuznetsova's US Open future hangs on a tie-break. Fabulous drama on Arthur Ashe.

1813: Cibulkova wins her serve and once again, Kuznetsova serving to stay in the US Open. Mmmmmm

1808: More facts and if you're a Kuznetsova fan then it's great news. Well better news anyway. She gets it to 5-5 after surviving two match points in the previous game. Cibulkova has played in two US Opens - she made the second round in 2007 and third round in 2008. She's close to the quarters. Can she do it?

1808: Monfils and Gasquet are 1-1 in the third set. A simple score latest for you. No thrills. Just facts.

1805: Hats off to Kuznetsova. She saves TWO match points and then breaks back. Gutsy stuff from the Russian who won Grand Slam titles at the 2004 US Open and the French Open last year. She now trails 4-5 in the second set and is now serving to stay in the match.

1802: A massive shock in store. 11th seed Kuznetsova has to break Cibulkova or she's OUT of the US Open. She's trailing 5-7 3-5. She's got two match points.......She saves them both and it goes to deuce...

1746: A French battle of the highest order. The second set has been a firecracker and it's 5-5 between Gasquet and Monfils. Monfils has a break point but a back-hand winner down the line is a corker and it's deuce. Brilliant game. And it's another brilliant rally. Monfils is struggling but pulls a forehand winner that gets him waving at the crowd encouraging more noise. And he breaks. He'll be serving for the second set. Stunning. Monfils has never been beyond the 4th round at Flushing Meadows. He's got one grand chance this afternoon. Both players are right in the top drawer at the moment though.

1741: A quick score from the women's doubles. First seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta lost the opener on a tie-break against Monica Niculescu and Sahar Peer but the Argentine and Italian are cruising 5-0 in the second set.
