2233: That's it from me ball watchers. Well done Murray - back-to-back Masters wins for the Scot? Log on to BBC Sport to find out. You can't beat cheesy sign-offs.

2227: As the tennis oracle that is Piers Newbery mentioned, Murray is up against Ernests Gulbis next. The Latvian beat 13th seed Juergen Melzer 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 7-6 (7-5) to book his place in the next round.

From BBC tennis writer Piers Newbery on Twitter: "@andy_murray gets it together with a solid final set to beat Chardy 6-3 6-7 6-2. Gulbis next - just the 21 aces from Ernests today... "

Andy Murray on his victory: "In the end it was frustrating. I wasn't making many mistakes in the first and he was making errors. In the second, I didn't serve very well but my mistakes were more to do with the way I was hitting from back in court - too short. I stepped it up in third set."

ANDY MURRAY BEATS JEREMY CHARDY 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-2

It's good news for a Briton
Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 Murray
It looks like Murray will be serving for the match after Chardy moves to 30-0. But back comes Murray and takes the game to deuce thanks to a lovely forehand down the line and a Chardy error. Murray earns two more match points and takes the second thanks to another mistake on his forehand.

* Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 2-5 Murray
Murray's regained his service mojo by the looks of it. Chardy's strong forehand is still proving a bit of an Achilles though. But another unforced error from the Frenchman means that Murray is a game away from victory.

Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 2-4 Murray *
Chardy manages to get his first serves in this time and holds serve to the game.

* Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 1-4 Murray
Stop Press... Murray holds serve....he should see out this one now. Chair break.

Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 1-3 Murray *
We're back tennis fans. Chardy seems to be moving OK after that brief medical interlude. Seems to have helped Murray a little. The world number four has a break point, but Murray mishits a return - not pretty. The game is taken to deuce and then two errors from Chardy - the second a terrible shot at the net - hands Murray the break. Now, can he hold?

From BBC tennis writer Piers Newbery on Twitter: "Hmmm. Murray's first serve has disappeared and Chardy levels at one set all. Predictions: AM to win, me to be tired & grumpy on 6am shift."

Anon via text: "Chardy defines the term ball-basher, but when he's at his best he's as dangerous as they come. Murray can help the situation by not putting them on "

* Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 1-2 Murray
Chardy's deep dipping forehands are causing Murray mild worry. He wins a challenge on his serve, which is called long, and then powers down his ninth ace of the match to take the game. Chardy has a medical time-out. His trainer is flexing his foot.

Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 1-1 Murray *
Likewise for Chardy. An ace takes the Frenchman to 40-0 another gives him the game.

* Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 0-1 Murray
Wait a sec. Murray's playing with all of us. He returns to his first set form with a service game to love.

SECOND SET

It's bad news for a Briton
Chardy 3-6 7-6 (7-3) Murray
Murray takes the mini-break before Chardy levels after punishing his opponent's less-than deadly-forehand. The Frenchman then messes matters up for himself with an ill-judged forehand that finds the net. But the Scot, with sun beating down on him, hits his forehand too long. They swap ends and Murray's in the shade. Chardy then smacks one up the line on Murray's serve. Murray gives away two more points and Chardy has three set points. Chardy takes the set with a cracking crosscourt forehand. Who'd have predicted that an hour ago?

* Chardy 3-6 6-6 Murray
Murray's become static all of a sudden. A routine forehand from Chardy leaves Murray stuck in the mud. The Frenchman then moves to set point, which he fails to take following an over-zealous return. Murray holds on to serve.

Chardy 3-6 6-5 Murray *
I think Murray's looking for a bit of tie-break fun. Chardy finally holds serve - the first hold of serve by either player in seven games. Murray needs to do the same or I'll have to entertain you for another set. You wouldn't want that would you?

* Chardy 3-6 5-5 Murray
Chardy has nothing to lose - apart from the match - so decides to go for some extravagant shots. They pay off but Murray also lends a hand with an overhit forehand which takes the game to deuce - wasting his first match point. Two fantastic winners from Chardy wins back the break. This is bonkers.

Chardy 3-6 4-5 Murray *
Talk about blowing hot and cold. Chardy is really finding it hard to hold serve. A stream of unforced errors hands his opponent yet another break. Lazy tennis from the Frenchman. Murray to serve for the match, although if he follows the recent pattern...

Chardy * 3-6 4-4 Murray
Murray double faults - it's 0-30. The Scot pulls it back, but then hits a forehand into net for deuce. Errors creeping in. Chardy then earns break point and takes it with Murray firing a backhand into the net from the baseline. Strange second set.

Chardy 3-6 3-4 Murray *
Another double fault from Chardy takes the game to deuce. An further error and yet another double fault hands Murray the break. And I thought the lad from Pau was back in it...

Rich, Brussels via text: "Isn't it nice to watch a Brit and not be always waiting for things to go wrong he plays these lower ranked players so well."

* Chardy 3-6 3-3 Murray
Blimey! Murray double faults and Chardy's chasing pays off. Two break points for the Frenchman. He takes the first with great play from the baseline which forces the fit Murray to perform a few shuttle runs, before a return from Chardy proves even too much for Mr Fantastic.

Chardy 3-6 2-3 Murray *
Murray decides to move into third gear. He races to two break points thanks to another unforced error from Chardy. Murray then dazzles with another crosscourt winner - this time backhand - to seal his break. Quality.

* Chardy 3-6 2-2 Murray
Back to the tennis, Murray kills Chardy's fierce return which the Frenchman fails to pass legally. 40-15. Murray then has a touch of fortune - which he deserves - with a forehand that clips the cord, passes Chardy and stays in.

2058: They're playing the Beach Boys while the players take a chair break - I'm not aware of Ohio's surfing culture. The Isley Brothers are from Cincinnati by the way music fans.

Chardy 3-6 2-1 Murray *
Chardy is taken to deuce again, but the Frenchman holds after Murray fails to cope with a tricky serve with a dash of kick.

Dundee Rocket on 606 : "Set and almost a non event. Andy could sit on the baseline and still win this. Chardy 19 UE`s enough to win near 5 games.. Still i guess Andy has to go thru the motions and make a mis-match of it.."
Chardy is feeling his way into this....or am I being too kind?

* Chardy 3-6 1-1 Murray
Another ace from Murray sees him hold serve again - he hasn't been tested on his serve yet.

Guy via text: "It would not be better for Andy to lose too early. He pretty much needs to match Soderling's performance here to maintain that top 4 ranking"
Well said Guy.

Chardy 3-6 1-0 Murray *
An early break for Murray, owing much to Chardy's unforced errors. The Scot takes the game to deuce with some good defensive play that frustrates his French opponent. Chardy saves a break point with his first Hollywood winner - a crosscourt flicked forehand. Chardy eventually holds serve with a good backhand volley at the net which even Murray can't get to.

FIRST SET

It's good news for a Briton
* Chardy 3-6 Murray
Murray wins his service game to love. Murray wins the first set without breaking sweat, or anything remotely wet.

Chardy 3-5 Murray *
Chardy's eagerness isn't doing him any favours. His urgency in looking for an early winner is not the right tactic against Murray. An excellent deft drop from the Scot earns two set points. Chardy saves both. After a min-deuce battle, the Frenchman keeps the first set alive. Tres bien.

* Chardy 2-5 Murray
Chardy's making some schoolboy errors now. Another forehand into the net from the baseline gives Murray a 40-15 lead. The great Brit goes for glory with a long forehand before taking the game. Time for another chair break.

Chardy 2-4 Murray *
Chardy mishits a forehand into the net to give Murray a 30-15 advantage. Murray then plays a superb crosscourt forehand for break point. Does he take it? But of course. Chardy comes to the net but plays his forehand too long.

* Chardy 2-3 Murray
Murray fires down his first ace to go 40-0 up. Par for the course, he makes no mistake in his third service game. They're not hanging about, these boys.

Chardy 2-2 Murray *
Chardy moves to 30-0 then double faults - bit early for that business isn't it? Chardy wins his second game as a result of an overhit double-handed backhand return from the Scot.

Neil, Aberdeen via text: "Hi there, it might actually be better for andy if he loses early in this tournament. He was shattered by playing too much last year. Best to keep his powder dry for flushing meadows."
Hang on guys, he is a professional tennis player....

* Chardy 1-2 Murray
Chardy wins his first point on Murray's serve with a lovely dipping forehand return. But again, the Scot holds and takes a breather on his chair.

Chardy 1-1 Murray *
A fairly easy opening service game for Frenchman Chardy. He's wearing a white baseball cap, white shirt and shorts.

* Chardy 0-1 Murray
Murray to serve. Faultless. I would love to write more, but there isn't much more to write about. Nice day in Cincinnati.
* denotes NEXT to serve

2009: I wouldn't say it's a packed house at Center (I'm going with the American spelling) Court. I think I counted about 300.

2006: ...and a white wristband. All very fashionable.

2005: Murray's out on court warming up - white shirt and blue shorts. Blue wristband - if you're that way inclined.

2004:Cincinnati headlines of the day so far - number two seed Novak Djokovic eased to a 6-3 7-5 second-round win over Serbia Victor Troicki while Rafael Nadal, who kept the 11,433-seater Center Court warm for Murray, recorded a 6-2 7-5 win over American Taylor Dent.

From BBC tennis writer Piers Newbery on Twitter: "Still reeling from the discovery that you can now buy chocolate weetabix, I need the reassurance of an @andy_murray win. Straight sets? "

Larry The Lamb via text: "I think Murray could almost do with an early exit here to ensure he's got peak fitness. He's beaten the top 2 so he's given due notice"

1957: Murray reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati last year, before he was stopped by the legend Federer. It's expected the British number one will steamroller past former Wimbledon junior champion Chardy today. However, the 23-year-old from Pau reached the last eight of the Rogers Cup and beat Florian Mayer 6-2 7-6 in the first round here, so he faces Murray for the second time in his career in some decent form. The first and last time the pair met was at the 2009 Canadian Masters, with Murray easing to a 6-4 6-2 win on that day.

1950: Hello all and welcome to coverage of Andy Murray's opening match at the Cincinnati Masters against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. Scot Murray is looking good going into this year's US Open (30 Aug) having picked up his first title of the season last Sunday when he beat Roger Federer to defend his Canadian Masters crown. He also defeated David Nalbandian and Rafael Nadal en route to winning in Toronto... now if he does something similar at Flushing Meadows. Note to self: Stop it. Anyway, if you feel like tweeting, texting on 81111 (UK) or +44 7786200666 (worldwide) with TENNIS before your message, or 606-ing then that would be much appreciated.
