British number 12 Richard Bloomfield created another upset to reach the quarter-finals of the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

Bloomfield, 27, who beat Christophe Rochus in the first round, defeated world number 56 and tournament second seed Santiago Giraldo 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

The world number 552 from Norfolk will face 262-ranked American Ryan Harrison.

Top seed Sam Querrey exited the tournament after losing 6-4 6-3 to Jamaica's Dustin Brown.

Right-hander Bloomfield, from Alpington, near Norwich, turned professional in 2002.

He rose to be British number four in 2006 and achieved a world ranking high of 176 the following year.

The Newport tournament boasts some well-known players, with number five seed Mardy Fish having no problems as he saw off Somdev Dewarman 6-2 6-0.

But France's Nicolas Mahut, playing his first tournament since losing to John Isner at Wimbledon in the longest match in history, crashed out 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to Frank Dancevic.

Defending champion Rajeev Ram was beaten 5-7 6-1 7-6 (7-3) by Raven Klaasen, while Brian Dabul and Olivier Rochus are also through to the last eight.
