Kent's Naomi Cavaday has defended her decision to turn down a wildcard for Wimbledon after losing in the ladies' singles qualifying tournament.

The 21-year-old lost to Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic in straight sets 6-1 6-2.

She told BBC Sport: "I don't regret my decision. It was the right thing to do and with how I was playing I definitely could have qualified.

"I was disappointed because I wanted to qualify and believed I could."

She added: "I thought it was the right thing for my tennis. I played qualifying for the first time last year and I made the last round coming through a tough section.

"I just thought 'why not give it another crack', I knew I could qualify, it's my best surface.

"The girls ranked between 100 and 200 are the ones I'm playing week-in, week-out and they are the girls I need to be beating if I want to get into the main draw on my own ranking."

Cavaday is appearing at Wimbledon this year in the ladies' doubles, and will partner Surrey's Anna Smith against Julia Goerges of Germany and Hungarian Agnes Szavay.

And the left-hander, who has made three appearances in the ladies' singles, said she is looking forward to getting on court.

"It's very different," she said. "It feels like there's a lot less pressure and I can't wait to get stuck in."
