Dan Evans is ranked 266th in the world
British number four Dan Evans suffered a 1-6 6-2 6-4 first-round defeat by Switzerland's Michael Lammer at the Heineken Open in New Zealand.
Having qualified for an ATP World Tour event for the first time, the 19-year-old looked confident as he won the first set against the world number 209.
But the Birmingham-born Brit then lost his way as Lammer proved too strong.
Evans managed to save two match points, recovering from 40-15 down in the 10th game, but Lammer held serve to win.
Meanwhile, British world number five Andy Murray will play a final match ahead of the Australian Open at the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament on Thursday with an opponent yet to be named.
Also in the field are Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Robin Soderling, Fernando Verdasco, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando Gonzalez.
