Watson suffers first-round defeat

Heather Watson
Watson was the first British girl to win the US Junior Open

Guernsey's Heather Watson has been knocked out of the Tevlin Challenger Event at the Rexall Centre in Toronto.

Watson was beaten by 1999 Wimbledon semi-finalist Alexandra Stevenson of the US 6-2 6-4 in round one.

The 17-year-old Guernsey star only qualified for the tournament after two entrants for the main draw pulled out after qualifying.

In the doubles, Watson and partner Julia Boserup lost to Canadians Gabriela Dobrowski and Rebecca Marino.
