Japan's Ai Sugiyama retired from tennis on a losing note as she was defeated in the doubles final of the Pan Pacific Open in Japan.

The 34-year-old has quit after a 17-year career in which she won three Grand Slam women's doubles titles.

In her final match, Sugiyama and Slovakian partner Daniela Hantuchova lost 6-4 6-2 to Alisa Kleybanova and Francesca Schiavone.

"Tennis gave me so much," said the former doubles world number one.

"I fought on the tennis court for such a long time. This was everything to me."

Sugiyama won six singles titles and 38 doubles titles, in addition to one US Open mixed doubles trophy in 1999.
