Safina survives scare to progress

Dinara Safina
Safina in action against Roberta Vinci in Cincinnati

World number one Dinara Safina came back from the brink to beat Italy's Roberta Vinci and advance to the third round of the Cincinnati Open.

Vinci, ranked 46, ran through the first set and served for the match at 5-4 in the second as Safina struggled to find any consistency.

But Vinci's nerve seemed to fail her and the Russian broke back and went on to level the match.

Safina was a break down in the decider before coming back to win 2-6 7-5 6-4.

The top seed later revealed that she had suffered an unusual injury shortly before her appearance in Los Angeles last week.

"I would say I lost a bet with a coconut," she joked.

"I was trying to open a coconut and actually didn't open it very good because the knife slipped and it went straight into my hand. It was pretty deep."

However, Safina's fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, the world number 10, crashed out 6-2 6-3 to Alona Bondarenko of the Ukraine.

World number three Venus Williams eased into round three, the American comfortably beating Olga Govortsova 6-2 6-2.

In the first round, 14th seed Flavia Pennetta followed up her tournament win in Los Angeles last weekend with a 6-2 6-3 win over Ayumi Morita of Japan.

Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova recovered from a slow start to beat Italy's Sara Errani 3-6 6-3 6-1 in a match lasting more than two-and-a-half hours.
