Sanchez stuns Wozniacki in Sweden

Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez

Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez saw off the challenge of top seed Caroline Wozniacki in the final of the Swedish Open on Saturday.

The unseeded Martinez Sanchez came through 7-5 6-4 to win the second WTA Tour title of her career and spoil Wozniacki's 19th birthday celebrations.

Martinez Sanchez rallied from 4-1 down in the second set before holding her nerve to win on her first match point.

"This was the most enjoyable tournament for me so far this season," she said.

"I felt right at home here and I hope to come back next year. I played very well and I'm happy I played my own game."

Wozniacki, the world number nine, had no complaints about her defeat in Bastad.

"Maria played better than me, she played smart and it was difficult to get a rhythm with her stop volleys," said Wozniacki.

"But I'm still happy to have reached the final."

Wozniacki's birthday may have been dampened by the defeat, but a magnanimous Martinez Sanchez promised to try to make amends.

"I'm sorry I spoiled your (birthday) celebrations, but I promise I will buy you something instead," she said.

Elsewhere, Hungary's Agnes Szavay beat Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in the final of the Budapest Grand Prix, winning 2-6 6-4 6-2.
