Top seed Federer, who needs to win to keep his hopes of reaching the last four alive, takes a tight first set on a tie-break

Federer had to work hard against a battling Stepanek. It was nip and tuck all the way with Federer making a number of unforced errors

Cheered on by the Chinese crowd Federer eventually comes through to win 7-6 6-4. He now needs to beat Andy Murray to progress
