Berdych's game proved too confusing for Del Potro in Tokyo
|
Tomas Berdych ended Juan Martin del Potro's superb run of form as the Czech won the Japan Open in straight sets.
Del Potro went into the final having won 29 of his previous 30 matches - the only defeat coming against Andy Murray at the US Open - but lost 6-1 6-4.
The Argentine took a medical time-out for stomach problems after losing the first set in 22 minutes.
"Everyone could see he had a problem, but he took some pills and was getting back into the match," said Berdych.
"It might have been different if Juan Martin was feeling better but I served well and everything came together," added the 23-year-old ninth seed.

Del Potro, who was seeded fifth in Tokyo, refused to blame his medical problems for the defeat, but instead claimed that Berdych's game had "confused" him.
"I took some medicine and I started playing a little bit better but it was too late. I didn't have any chance. He played great. It was his day," said the 20-year-old.
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki won the women's tournament, beating fifth-seed Estonian Kaia Kanepi 6-2 3-6 6-1.
It was the 18-year-old Dane's third WTA Tour title following wins in Stockholm and New Haven earlier this year.
Meanwhile, fifth seed Dmitry Tursunov captured his fifth career title by defeating French fourth seed Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (8-6) 1-6 6-4 in the Moselle Open final in Metz.
