SECOND SET:

0441: "Rename it Murray Monday at US Open! I am going to be so late for work!"
From Shaye, Liverpool, via text on 81111

See you all at 2200 BST for the big one - Murray v Federer in the men's final. Still sounds weird.

0440: "I'm so excited," says Serena. "I wasn't even going for number one and it's just an added bonus."

0438: "I was proud to be in the final but I'm obviously disappointed I lost," says a clearly gutted Jankovic. "Serena was just too good tonight." She adds: "It's the best crowd in the world." Nice touch.

Serena 7-5 Jankovic
Serena gets to match point but Jankovic saves it when a net cord allows her to unload on a big forehand down the line and it's deuce. The Serb then makes another winner before double-faulting on game point. Jankovic puts a backhand in the net and it's championship point number two.... another epic rally and Serena takes it with a thumping backhand!!!!

The American goes predictably and understandably bananas, leaping around and screaming.

Serena 6-5 Jankovic
At 30-30 we get arguably the best rally of a match stuffed with incredible rallies - the crowd are on their feet and I almost join them. Serena takes it with a smash that Jankovic just fails to get back - and the Serb then upsets the crowd by complaining about the length of time Serena is taking between points. The American could not care less and charges the net on game point, finding the kind of lunging backhand stop volley that Stefan Edberg built a career on. Amazing.

Serena 5-5 Jankovic
You don't want to try and predict anything here. Serena hits smash, backhand, forehand for 0-40 and three break-back points. After eight points in a row she fails to make a return, nets a backhand, and puts a forehand wide. What is going on? Another winner, another break point.... another error. And repeat. Jankovic has saved five break points before she hits an ace - and a double fault!!! Jankovic then hits a backhand winner while doing the splits, but the replay says it was off a second bounce. Umpire Alison Lang does well to notice - she's British, you know - and it's break point number six for Serena. The American moves Jankovic all over the place before finally, desperately, thankfully, firing a forehand winner. We're all square.

Serena 4-5 Jankovic
Well, something's up with Serena. Jankovic takes the first point with a smash straight at the American and cannot surpress another grin - she's a devil - before Serena barely tries to keep the ball in play as she gives up three set points at 0-40. Then, from nowhere, Serena gets a burst of energy and recovers to deuce before smacking a couple of big serves.

Serena 3-5 Jankovic
Jankovic moves 30-0 clear before Serena moves forward and takes a volley early to cut the deficit - she's trying to shorten the points and looks tired. A Serena cross-court winner follows, but Jankovic hits a smash and Serena dumps a forehand into the net. A third set looms.

Serena 3-4 Jankovic
Serena heads to the chair for a towel down after the previous game, despite it not being a changeover. Jankovic is not best pleased and complains to the umpire. We then get more bad feeling at 40-30 when an incensed Serena insists a ball is wide but there is no call. The umpire says the line judge was unsighted and calls up Hawkeye, which says the ball landed smack on the line. Jankovic turns away with a little smirk. It goes to a couple of deuces before a woeful Serena drop shot into the net hands Jankovic the break. Drama.

Serena 3-3 Jankovic
Serena decides this is the time to step it up and she takes every opportunity to move forward and attack the net. At 15-40 she has two more break points, but this time it's Jankovic who goes to the net and makes the crucial volley. Serena then goes long with a forehand and Jankovic comes through. It's punishing stuff for both women at the moment.

Serena 3-2 Jankovic
Serena plays a very tired double fault and an unforced error and is struggling at 0-30 but Williams digs deep to find some big serves and hold on.

Serena 2-2 Jankovic
More slapstick stuff on the first point - bit harsh that actually, it's a great rally that ends with Jankovic playing a lob volley over a stranded Serena at the net. Jankovic gets a game point but an error takes it back to deuce. Two errors from Serena then give up the game and the American is starting to look a little tired.

Serena 2-1 Jankovic
Jankovic is brought to her knees, quite literally, when Serena pulls her left and right before volleying past her for 30-15. Jankovic gets the Serbian contingent in the crowd going when she wins another epic rally to trail 40-30, but Serena leaps to put away a smash and pumps her fist towards her supporters in the stands. She's fired up.

Serena 1-1 Jankovic
More danger signals for Jankovic when Serena bludgeons a forehand past her down the line but she saves two break points from 15-40. Some wonderful hitting from both women at deuce - Jankovic arrows a backhand into the corner before Serena almost knocks her over with a heavy return. The Serb finally closes out the game but she's starting to look tired as Serena gives her the runaround.

Serena 1-0 Jankovic
Serena races through a love-service game and she looks determined to see this one out quickly.

FIRST SET:

Serena 6-4 Jankovic
Not entirely unpredictably, Jankovic fails to build on her good work of the last game and falls 0-40, and three set points, behind. The Serb saves the first with a good forehand but goes long on the second - confirmed by Hawkeye - and Serena has the first set.

0306: "Im still on a high after the murray win. I cant sleep too excited! Go serena."
From Jason, London, via text on 81111

Serena 5-4 Jankovic
Serena double faults for 0-30 before playing a dreadful drop shot, which Jankovic clips past her at an acute angle before giving a broad grin to the crowd. Serena won't like that. The American saves a first break point before Jankovic makes her wait to serve on the second - Serena really won't like that. Jankovic goes long with a forehand but Serena then nets a backhand and we're back on serve.

Serena 5-3 Jankovic
Tasty stuff on the first point. Jankovic is in Serena's sights after the American chases down a poor drop shot and absolutely slams a backhand straight at the Serb. In the act of avoiding the missile, Jankovic manages to get a racquet on the ball and sends the volley back past Serena. This time it's the American who looks less than thrilled. Jankovic comes through another tight game after a couple of deuces.

Serena 5-2 Jankovic
Serena is in a bit of trouble at 0-30 but finds some big serves to get her out of it, ending the game with a sharp volley, and Jankovic looks understandably miffed.

Serena 4-2 Jankovic
Serena takes the initiative with an early move to the net, thumping away a smash, but Jankovic responds with a forehand drive down the line. Serena then gets the benefit of a net cord before pulling one into the tram lines, and it's 30-30. Jankovic then double faults, emphasising by how much when she goes to Hawkeye, and Serena makes her pay with a fantastic forehand down the line.

0245: "Anything can happen in this match but I think the standard of play is extremely high and the crowd is really appreciating it."
Wendy Turnbull on 5 Live

Serena 3-2 Jankovic
This is pretty good, you know. Serena belts down a huge serve for 30-0 but Jankovic comes up with a blistering backhand down the line before sticking a smash long and netting with a backhand. Topsy turvy but entertaining.

Serena 2-2 Jankovic
Life continues to go dreamily for Jankovic as she eases to 40-0 but that appears to give Serena the boot up the backside she needs, and the American reels off five straight points to break back.

Serena 1-2 Jankovic
Some very sloppy stuff from Serena sees the American slip 0-40 down, and Jankovic then mishits a return that lands plum on the baseline and brings an error from Serena. the first break of the day goes to the Serb.

Serena 1-1 Jankovic
It would be understandable if Jankovic were the more nervous in her first Grand Slam final but she appears perfectly calm as she gets to 40-30, before Serena plays a howler of a forehand volley over the baseline. At the moment, the most nervous Jankovic in the building is her mother, who is constantly sipping from a large water bottle. At least I think it's water.

Serena 1-0 Jankovic
The pair trade backhand winners on the first two points before Serena cracks away a smash for 30-15, and Venus - still sporting her enormous hairdo - claps heartily in the stands. It's slightly edgy stuff from both players as we get to deuce, before Serena takes a tough opener with a backhand down the line. Great start from both players.

0220: "I have to be up for college in 4 1/2 hours but I am awake following tennis updates. Do i have my priorities wrong?"
From Andy via text on 81111 - Absolutely, but it's too late now, eh?

0217:5 Live's Jonathan Overend has grabbed a word withAndy Murray. "Nadal is the best player in the world right now and you expect him to raise his game at the important moments, you just have to do the same. It was my goal at the start of the tournament to win it and I'm going to have to play one of my best matches, but it's possible."

0214: The players are out on court to a suitably raucous reception. Jankovic looks as chirpy as usual is in her lemon yellow number, Serena looks all business in her red outfit. Billie Jean King is out to perform the coin toss.

0211: All the pomp and ceremony of a Grand Slam final as Anita Baker belts out the US national anthem on a star-spangled Arthur Ashe Stadium.

0205: But enough of tomorrow, let's get back to today. Or yesterday, as it is in New York. Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic are about to battle it out for the US Open title and number one spot. Serena leads their head-to-head 4-3, and it's 1-1 this year. That suggests it will be tight, although the American has looked the better en route to the final.

0200: Yep, still here, still feeling lightheaded with a severe case of Murraymania. The countdown is on - only 20 hours until Murray v Federer.
