Del Potro hammers Roddick in LA

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro swept past Andy Roddick in Los Angeles to win his third consecutive tournament.

Del Potro, 19, broke the American's first two service games and powered on for a 6-1 7-6 (7-2) victory.

The 6ft 6in teenager won back-to-back clay titles in Stuttgart and Kitzbuhel last month and dominated against Roddick on the LA hard courts.

Roddick needed treatment for a back injury in the first set but was already 4-1 down as Del Potro took command.

"I played a very good week and today I played unbelievable," said the Argentine after his victory.

"I don't think Roddick was 100% but I played unbelievable to win. I beat (Tommy) Robredo last year but to beat Roddick in the United States, I think is the best win of my career."

Former world number one Roddick refused to blame his back injury, preferring instead to praise his opponent's display.

"I could have played really well but I am not sure it would have mattered. I missed a few returns but other than that I was okay," he said.

The pair now move on to Washington for next week's Legg Mason Classic, where they are the top two seeds.

Roddick chose not to represent the United States at the Beijing Olympics in order to prepare for the US Open, which begins on 25 August.

Del Potro has rocketed to a career-high ranking of 24 in recent weeks and will rise further in the new rankings on Monday.
