Defeat it may have been, but Murray's performance against Nadal convinced many that he was a Grand Slam champion in waiting.
His form did not dip. He successfully defended his San Jose title before reaching back-to-back Masters semi-finals, beating top 10 players Nikolay Davydenko, Tommy Haas and Andy Roddick on the way.
It meant Murray became the 19th teenager in history to rank in the men's top 10.
"It takes a lot of hard work to get to the top 10. I'm just pleased it paid off."
