1836: "If the champion was decided by virtue of having the most entertaining matches in the tournament, Federer would win this year hands down. But it's not, so Nadal's still clear favourite."

Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 7-5 Monfils
The players are forced to wait as the crowd on Philippe Chatrier court finish off a couple of rounds of the Mexican wave. Once the atmosphere has settled, Monfils moves to 30-0. Federer glides into the net to nick a point at 30-15. A double fault brings up 30-30 and Federer earns another match point with a reaching overhead. And this time the world number one takes it, winning the fourth set in exactly an hour and booking his place against Rafael Nadal in the final. He looks pretty happy too as he jumps around the court.
1828: "On this form Nadal will blow Fed off the court. He is making so many mistakes and shocking unforced errors. I don't think he can raise his level again."

Monfils carries forward the momentum at 0-15 but Federer gets back on track at 30-15 and holds to put the pressure back on the unseeded Frenchman.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 5-5 Monfils
Federer takes the first point from Monfils as he runs around the court and finishes it off with an overhead. A deft touch from Le Fed brings applause from the crowd and 0-30 on the scoreboard. Monfils rescues a point as he leans into a forehand down the line for 15-30. Federer moves to double match point as he clips a volley over the net but he shoots long at 30-40. Monfils saves the second match point with an ace. Another tight ace moves Monfils to advantage and the crowd to their feet. Monfils falls to the ground again as he tries to return Federer's slice return - and back to deuce we go. Another great shot down the line from Monfils takes him back to advantage and he throws his arms in the air as he holds. Roger's box of guests look glumly through the excited French crowd.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 5-4 Monfils
It's nice and easy for Federer though as he holds to love.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 4-4 Monfils
Federer must want to finish this off now as he rushes to 15-30 on Monfils' serve but a fierce forehand takes the Frenchman to 30-30. Federer puts pay to a long rally with a fizzing forehand of his own at 30-40 but has to settle for deuce as his crosscourt forehand bounces into the tramlines. A lovely shot dips right into the far left corner as Monfils takes advantage but Federer brings up deuce again with a bullet of a passing shot. And the crowd crank up the volume as Monfils holds.
1807: "You can tell Anonymous (1718) that it doesn't work like that."
By another Anonymous via text I'm half tempted to say tell him yourself but seeing as you're both so secretive...
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 4-3 Monfils
A bad miss from Federer sees him slide to 15-30 and there is a burst of cheers from the crowd as Monfils moves to 15-40. Federer coolly saves one point and Monfils wildly hits his return out for 40-40. And for the second game in a row Federer holds from 15-40.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 3-3 Monfils
My colleague to my left, Caroline Cheese, is drinking from a bottle containing Arsenal water sourced at the Emirates. I'm quite disturbed by this turn of events. Meanwhile, Monfils plays a steady game to love.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 3-2 Monfils
Monfils rolls around in the clay and covers himself in the red stuff as he sees his break chance go at 40-40. Federer saves from 15-40 to hold.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 2-2 Monfils
It's the late in the day for chit-chat but I'm not impressed with Monfils' nickname, by the way. Apparently he's called Sliderman. Federer reaches 30-40 but Monfils does well to save deuce. A big serve takes the Frenchman to advantage and Federer flicks into the sidelines to see the break chance slip away.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 2-1 Monfils
Federer misses an easy volley at the net for 0-15 and he shoots long again at 15-30. Left, right, left right - Monfils scurries across the court but it's Federer who takes the point at 30-30. A huge forehand takes the game to deuce and Federer looks like he's lost his focus a bit as Monfils takes advantage. The Frenchman goes long at the crucial moment for deuce. But another scuffed volley sees Monfils take advantage once more. A decent serve from Fed brings round deuce again. And the Swiss plays some clever shots at the net to hold.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 1-1 Monfils
Such a casual demeanour from Monfils, but it works as he holds to love.
Federer 6-2 5-7 6-3 1-0 Monfils
A love game from Federer and thoughts are turning to a Federer-Nadal final for the third year in a row.
"The fact that Federer generates so many break point opportunities against Nadal would suggest that its more of a mental problem he has in overcoming Nadal. In last year's final he had over 17 chances, Nadal didn't have half that many, but made the most of his."

The tensions rising out on court as Federer takes Monfils to 15-30 but he gets his return long for 30-30. Surely the world number one is on his way to the final now?
Federer 6-2 5-7 5-3 Monfils
Gosh, I've had a little slump after my flapjack and rice cake - or gallette di riso as it says on the packet. But Monfils has woken up because he's got Federer flailing at 15-40. A big serve and a volley at the net gets the Swiss out of trouble at 40-40. Monfils saves set point for a second deuce and Federer goes long to gift Monfils advantage. And he gets the break with a huge backhand.
Federer 6-2 5-7 5-2 Monfils
Hmmm the experts are already talking about the Nadal-Federer final but we're not done here yet. Monfils holds to love, and Federer must serve out for the set.
Federer 6-2 5-7 5-1 Monfils
Federer holds to 30 to turn the match right into this favour now.
1718: "Anyone else think that if Fed can lose a set to Monfils there's no chance he can beat Nadal?"

Federer 6-2 5-7 4-1 Monfils
Is the match sliding away from Monfils? The Frenchman is down at 0-30 on his serve. The 21-year-old recovers 30-30 but goes long at 30-40 and Federer pounces to take the double break.
Federer 6-2 5-7 3-1 Monfils
At 2-1 down in the second, Monfils broke straight back, but what can he do this time? Some heavy hitting takes Monfils to 15-30 but Federer levels. A little lapse sees Federer slide to deuce and Monfils takes advantage with an easy overhead. The Swiss recovers deuce and Monfils nets, rolls to the ground and spits out clay as he gets up. Federer saves the break chance and takes a 3-1 lead.
Federer 6-2 5-7 2-1 Monfils
Federer is looking for the break and lashes down an overhand at 30-40. And the world number one does break for a 2-1 lead.

Federer 6-2 5-7 0-1 Monfils
Monfils gets into a bit of trouble early on as he slides to 15-30. Here's a sight we don't want to see twice in a match; Federer falls to his knees again and fumbles on the clay as he lifts himself back up. Monfils holds.
"Monfils take the set! In your faces all the doubters"
Ntini on 606 Steady on there.
Federer 6-2 5-7 Monfils
Federer takes his eye off the ball for just one second and the next thing he knows Monfils has taken him to 40-40. Le Fed sinks to a second deuce and Monfils sends a looping forehand down the line for advantage and set point. The crowd have to be shooshed by the umpire, but Federer saves a third deuce. Uh-oh, Federer nets a volley to hand Monfils a second set point and unbelievably Federer goes long. That's the break and the set to Monfils. You can imagine how happy the French crowd are about that.
Federer 6-2 5-6 Monfils
Federer ominously wipes his brow as he zones in on a break at 0-15. But Federer floats his backhand long and Monfils is soon up to 40-30. A bizarre return straight into the dirt sees Monfils sink to 40-40. Hmmm, second and third deuces come and go, a bit of a tight game this one. But guess who takes it? Yep, it's Monfils.
Federer 6-2 5-5 Monfils
Check it out. A couple of errors and Federer slides to 0-30. Monfils is grunting like a beached whale on the clay, or maybe an especially large seal, as he chases down each shot - but Federer recovers for 30-30. The Frenchman stretches for a forehand and sees Federer net for deuce. A second deuce comes and goes, and eventually Federer holds.
Federer 6-2 4-5 Monfils
Monfils is keeping it interesting out there as he holds for a 5-4 lead in the second.
Federer 6-2 4-4 Monfils
Is there a fenetre of opportunity here for Monfils as Federer nets at 15-30? Um, maybe not as Federer fizzes a forehand across the court for 40-30 and he holds as Monfils goes long.
Federer 6-2 3-4 Monfils
Monfils digs himself out of a bit of trouble at 30-30 with a huge forehand, which he greets with a huge shout of, um, something in French. The Parisian is just struggling to close out the game as he slides to a second deuce. But a big forehand sees him hold.
Federer 6-2 3-3 Monfils
Well Monfils is looking pretty positive at the moment, as he pumps his fist at 15-30 on Federer's serve. Federer loses his cool as he slips and tumbles but Monfils cannot take advantage and the floored Swiss moves to 40-30 and holds.
1618:"I'm torn here. I'd like Monfils to do well, because he's young and it's his big day - but he really is such a negative player at times."

Federer 6-2 2-3 Monfils
All square at 30-30 and Federer bobs his head, which is about as demonstrative as he'll get, as Monfils goes to 40-30 and then holds to edge ahead.
Federer 6-2 2-2 Monfils
Hello, a couple of errors from Le Fed and Monfils is let in at 0-30. The Frenchman whips a fierce forehand across the court for 15-40 and he breaks right back. Do we have a match on? If so, I might crack open my batch of flapjack.
Federer 6-2 2-1 Monfils
Monfils looks like he is a bit more settled out there now. He's trying to play more aggressively and take the game to Fed, but that kind of play can lead to mistakes and the Frenchman slides to 30-40. A passing shot on his backhand does the job for Federer as he breaks.
Federer 6-2 1-1 Monfils
A pretty uneventful game as Federer holds to 15.
Federer 6-2 0-1 Monfils
Monfils fires down two aces as he races to 40-0. A show-boating shot between the legs comes to nothing as he slides back to 40-15 but Federer goes just wide so Monfils holds to 15.
Federer 6-2 Monfils
Roger's got new balls and he's serving for the set. Looks like the set has got his name all over as he races to a 40-15 lead. That's it, the world number one takes the first set in 31 minutes. The French crowd will have to levez leur jeu if they want to help Monfils turn this match around methinks.
"Monfils seems too lightweight in front of Federer. Just cannot see him stretching Fed to 4 sets."

Federer 5-2 Monfils
A diagonal forehand from Monfils sees him climb back to 15-30 but Federer grabs a double break point at 15-40 with a unreturnable forehand. Monfils claws back deuce as his low, low pick-up shot skims the net. Federer rushes in to the net to plop the ball at Monfils' feet for advantage but he nets so the game back to deuce. Federer sends his return into the tramlines and the French world number 59 holds serve and returns to his seat.
Federer 3-1 Monfils
Monfils moves to 15-30 on Federer's serve but the Swiss world number one is unfazed and serves out the game for a 3-1 lead with 13 minutes on the clock.
1538: Ah-ha, so that's solved that little mystery. Monfils is having some eye-drops applied to his left eye. There are some suggestions some of that pesky red clay may have flicked up and got in there.
Federer 2-1 Monfils
Monfils and Federer are locked at 30-30 in the third game and a big serve and long return by Federer sees the Frenchman edge 40-30 ahead. Federer takes him to deuce but Monfils gets his first points on the board. And that's a morale-boosting hold for the Frenchman.
Federer 2-0 Monfils
Federer holds to 15 and it looks like there are a few problems for Monfils out there. The 21-year-old keeps rubbing his left eye and he goes to the chair again to ask for assistance.
"How on earth did Monfils need a comfort break? Did he forget to 'go' before he came out?? Talk about lack of preparation..."
Stueym on 606
Federer 1-0 Monfils
Oh dear, a bit of a nervous starts for Monfils as he hands Federer three break points. The Parisian lets out a gasp as he concedes an early break and tamely too.
1528: Monfils disappeared for an early comfort break but he's back out on court now and is ready to serve.
1525: A pretty decent reception for Monfils from the French crowd. He is the first Frenchman to reach the semi-finals since 2001, you know. But Roger needn't feel too lonely out there as his Mum and Dad, Robert and Lynette, are in Paris to see him.
1522: "Monfils is the only person who can beat Nadal now. Fed-Ex has tried on two occasions and failed."
IDidNotZee on 606
1518: The sound of the ball pinging across the net like a horse with only one hoof signals that the players are out warming up.
1510: So Rafa Nadal's made it four in a row and is into the French Open final now old rival Roger Federer and cheeky Frenchman Gael Monfils will battle it out to meet him there.
World number one Federer holds a 3-0 head-to-head record over the unseeded Parisian.
But Federer's form has been patchy this season because of the lingering effects of a virus so there's every chance Monfils could 'Do a Tsonga' and cause a major shock.
Unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga upset the odds by reaching this year's Australian Open final where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
Can Monfils do likewise in his home city of Paris or will Federer prove too strong?Join the debate on 606
