LTA hands player role to Martens

Steven Martens
Martens impressed the LTA in his previous role as head of technical support

The Lawn Tennis Association has unveiled former Belgian Davis Cup captain Steven Martens as its new player director.

Martens was previously personal coach to Sabine Appelmans and Xavier Malisse before joining the LTA two years ago.

He began as head of technical support and has effectively been made number two to chief executive Roger Draper.

The role will allow Martens to oversee the men's and women's games, while also being asked to identify young talent.

"He's impressed the LTA with his fresh ideas and it's a clear promotion," said BBC tennis correspondent Jonathan Overend.

"But it's a massive job needing full-time commitment and his media work may have to be sacrificed."

Martens is currently in Paris covering the French Open for Belgian TV.

He also had a role as technical director at the Belgium Tennis Federation in 2005.
