Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko opened his French Open campaign with a 6-3 6-3 6-3 win over Sweden's Thomas Johansson.

The Russian world number four had treatment for a thigh problem during the rain-interrupted match but it did not seem to hamper him.

Johansson was broken five times and failed to convert the single break point he engineered.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal managed only two games of his opening match before play was halted by rain.

The Spaniard was level with Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci at one game all when a heavy shower forced players to run for cover.

Davydenko meets fellow Russian Marat Safin or Jean-Rene Lisnard next.

Safin and Lisnard will return on Wednesday, with their match poised at one set all.

Ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka beat the showers to post an impressive 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over big-hitting German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Wawrinka will face Robin Haase of the Netherlands or Croatia's Marin Cilic for a place in the last 32.

Sweden's Robin Soderling pulled off a minor upset as he crushed Argentine 13th seed Juan Monaco 6-2 6-3 6-1.

And Croatia's Mario Ancic, who is climbing the rankings following a long lay-off with glandular fever, knocked out 31st seed Andreas Seppi 6-2 7-6 (7-1) 6-2.
