Sharapova won her first 18 matches of the year
World number five Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from next week's Sony Ericsson Open in Miami citing a shoulder injury.
The Russian, twice a runner-up at Key Biscayne, saw her 18-match unbeaten start to 2008 end against Svetlana Kuznetsova in Indian Wells on Friday.
Sharapova admitted after that defeat that she was feeling jaded.
Asked if she would take time off, she said: "I don't know, maybe next week. My body is kind of hurting a bit."
Sony Ericsson Open tournament director Adam Barrett said: "We wish Maria a speedy recovery and hope she is able toreturn to the court quickly.
"Our fans will miss watching her on the court but I know she still plans on coming to Miami so they will still have the opportunity to see her on site and around town."
And a statement on Sharapova's website confirmed: "It is not known yet which tournament Maria will return to but she will be at the tournament doing various things."
