0955: You have to say well done Shazza - and I bet you Lindsay probably will. Although she may not call her Shazza. The Russian was at her focused and aggressive best. Davenport was made to look like a 31-year-old veteran who's just come back after a year off.

Sharapova 6-1 6-3 Davenport
A disappointing end. Davenport is denied the game when Sharapova's forehand clips the net and trickles over. Davenport saves one match point with a glorious forehand but Sharapova roars back.

Sharapova 6-1 5-3 Davenport
Davenport puts a forehand millimetres long and the writing's on the wall for the American now.

"Lindsay simply doesn't have the intensity to match Sharapova - as I feared. It's really glaring, examining footwork and preparation, how Davenport is simply unused to this level of competition."

Sharapova 6-1 4-3 Davenport
Sharapova hits a backhand which lands less than six feet away from Davenport, but the American's not moving for that. Forget it. Davenport does brilliantly to save three break points but slaps a forehand into the net and Sharapova fires a return winner to edge closer to victory.

Sharapova 6-1 3-3 Davenport
A couple of spectators hold up play as they amble to their seats - and get a huge round of applause when they finally sit down. There doesn't seem to be any stopping Shazza though. She flings a backhand down the line to make it 30-0 and holds to 15.

"What's this about Stepanek and Vaidisova...? No she's mine... Whatever he's got I want some of it... Sulk."

Sharapova 6-1 2-3 Davenport
Nervous moments for Davenport as a double fault hands Sharapova a break point - and the Russian really doesn't need gifts the way she is playing. Great recovery from Lindsay though and we're on serve after five games.

Sharapova 6-1 2-2 Davenport
That's more like the Davenport of old: standing in the middle of the court and belting forehands to opposite corners. But she's already 40-0 down and despite a return winner on the next point, the Russian goes in to full screaming mode and comes through.

"This is not tennis. This is a massacre. But I suppose Davenport shouldn't be too upset. She had her glory days and she still looks in great shape for a young mom."

Sharapova 6-1 1-2 Davenport
Davenport's movement was never her strong point but not surprisingly, she's half a step slower these days - which is a major obstacle when you're up against the likes of Sharapova and the Williams sisters. Luckily she doesn't have to move to hit a big serve and that's keeping her out of trouble at the moment.

Sharapova 6-1 1-1 Davenport
Davenport flings her racquet at a forehand return. It's an ugly shot and it's out. Love game for Shazza.

Sharapova 6-1 0-1 Davenport
BBC Sport commentator Chris Bailey informs us that the hot gossip in Melbourne involves Radek Stepanek's relationship with Nicole Vaidisova. Apparently, he's applied for a marriage licence. Words fail me. What is Radek's secret? Much better start from Davenport in this set.

First set

Sharapova 6-1 Davenport
Sharapova is very pleased with herself and so she should be. She is bossing this. Davenport's looking slightly better now but still too many mistakes - and she looks pedestrian compared to her 20-year-old opponent.

Sharapova 5-1 Davenport
As Davenport prepares to open the game, Sharapova is prowling behind the baseline, one fist clenched as she urges herself on. Extraordinary focus and aggression. Davenport opens with two big serves but Sharapova gets back to 30-30 with some incredible retrieving. But much to her relief, Davenport is on the board at last.

Sharapova 5-0 Davenport
Davenport's only win against Sharapova in five previous attempts was a 6-0 6-0 demolition in Indian Wells in 2005. The Russian couldn't be on her way to sweet revenge could she? An ace seals a love service game.

Sharapova 4-0 Davenport
Davenport gets a sympathetic cheer as a backhand winner saves the first of three break points. She won't have heard one of those too many times in her career. Sharapova's not interested in any sentimentality though as she hammers a forehand down the line to break for the second time.

"I don't expect too much from Davenport. Sharapova should be streaks better than Davenport anyway. She's had many more competitive matches recently and she's 11 years younger."
BBC Sport analyst Sam Smith

Sharapova 3-0 Davenport
Too many mistakes from Davenport so far. Sharapova, who has a 4-1 win-loss record over her American rival, is just a bit sharper and a bit more lively.

Sharapova 2-0 Davenport
A cunning crosscourt backhand gets Sharapova to 30-30 and she's got a break point when Davenport goes long. Sharapova is a bit lucky to get away with it after missing the chance to put away a forehand - but another mistake from Davenport gives Shazza the early break.

Sharapova 1-0 Davenport
Interesting start. At 0-15, Sharapova bangs a serve down the 'T' which is called wide. Even at this early stage, the Russian isn't afraid to risk one of her three challenges. She's right too and she gets off to a solid enough start.

0845: Away we go then. Sharapova to serve.

0840: Lindsay gets a huge ovation from an expectant Rod Laver Arena crowd as the players are introduced. I'd say it was louder than the one Shazza got.

0838: Here's what Lindsay had to say before walking out on court: "You never know what you get when you're unseeded. It's exciting to get back out on Rod Laver - I didn't think I'd be able to."

0835: A former world number one against a former world number one. This is going to be good folks.
