606: DEBATE

Third set:

Kuznetsova 6-1 Chakvetadze
There we have it - Kuznetsova wraps things up with a hold to 15 as Chakvetadze puts a backhand wide. It has not been good but we can expect more from Venus and Henin in the next one, stay with us.

Kuznetsova 5-1 Chakvetadze
Chakvetadze looks on course for a relatively solid hold at 40-15 but lets Kuznetsova back into the game at deuce, and puts a backhand wide to drop serve. And that, should be that.

Kuznetsova 4-1 Chakvetadze
Chakvetadze has two chances to get back into the set but puts regulation forehands well long on both break points. Kuznetsova gets to game point with a good wrong-footing forehand winner and goes on to hold.

Kuznetsova 3-1 Chakvetadze
At 0-30 Chakvetadze thumps a forehand right into the corner for a brave winner, but then follows up with a double fault. She saves a first break point in a long baseline exchange but misjudges a forehand on the second and Kuznetsova takes control.

Kuznetsova 2-1 Chakvetadze
Some better stuff in this game, with Kuznetsova moving to the net and angling away a forehand volley on her way to 40-0. Chakvetadze makes another error two points later and it's a solid hold for Kuznetsova.

Kuznetsova 1-1 Chakvetadze
Chakvetadze wins the rally of the match with a forehand winner to get back to 30-30 before Kuznetsova nets a forehand on break point moments later. A second chance comes along and this time Chakvetadze fails to control a heavy Kuznetsova slice, putting a forehand wide.

Kuznetsova 0-1 Chakvetadze
They're back! Can't say the same for all the spectators but never mind. The quality of play remains pretty poor, so much so that Chakvetadze hurls her racquet about 20ft in anger. She then promptly wins four straight points and takes her second break point by forcing a forehand error from Kuznetsova.

2014: "Am i the only person left who's interested in this match? well....its only because i did a double bet Kuznetsova and France!"
From Andrew in Coleraine via text (France have just gone 6-3 down. Shame that)

2009: The players have been given a 10-minute break because of the heat rule. It will probably be the best 10 minutes of the match, and gives you the chance to cheer me up with witty texts on 81111 or comments on 606.

Second set:

Kuznetsova 6-1 Chakvetadze
Chakvetadze puts a return wide and it's one set all. All the drama of the third set to follow. Sigh.

Kuznetsova 5-1 Chakvetadze
Kuznetsvoa holds to 30, meanwhile the cameraman pans to a shot of Greg Norman who is stepping out with Chirs Evert these days. There you go.

2002: "I do not believe this match! It's like watching my sister and me playing."
From EuropeanBeauty on 606 (Come on, you must be better than these two)

2001: "I'm afraid this has been a lesson in mediocrity so far."
Times correspondent Neil Harman on 5live Sports Extra

Kuznetsova 4-1 Chakvetadze
Oh dear. Chakvetadze goes for a smash and completely misses the ball. Shen then sticks a forehand into the bottom of the net and drops serve to love. This is a Grand Slam semi-final by the way.

1959: "Please god don't let this go to a 3rd set. Can't wait to see venus beat henin."
From B Marsh via text on 81111

Kuznetsova 3-1 Chakvetadze
The momentum has well and truly shifted now, with Chakvetadze sending a couple of ropey forehands long to lose the game.

Kuznetsova 2-1 Chakvetadze
Kuznetsova breaks into a broad grin when Chakvetadze double faults to drop serve to love.

Kuznetsova 1-1 Chakvetadze
Chakvetadze draws Kuznetsova into a lengthy rally and then sticks a backhand past her as she lumbers towards the net. A backhand error follows from Kuznetsova and she's 0-40 down. The ex-champ saves two before going very close with a forehand that Chakvetadze challenges unsuccessfully. Kuznetsova saves a fourth break point with a huge forehand down the line and hangs on after three deuces.

Kuznetsova 0-1 Chakvetadze
Chakvetadze is under a little bit of pressure at 40-30 but comes up with a solid backhand drive-volley to take the game.

1940: "Hi piers, as game is boring and i cant watch it: what's the news on the outfit front?"
From anon via text (Good question - Chak is in her usual salmon pink number and looks about 12 years old, Sveta is sticking with the sleeveless red top and white headband that is a bit Jana Novotna, I'd say)

First set:

Kuznetsova 3-6 Chakvetadze
Kuznetsova breaks new ground even by her own standards today. She wallops a backhand that is supposed to go down the line but actually lands outside the doubles court. At set-point down, she double faults.

Kuznetsova 3-5 Chakvetadze
Kuznetsova finally gets some impetus with a couple of decent shots that include a backhand cross-court pass, and the 2004 champion gets one of the breaks back.

Kuznetsova 2-5 Chakvetadze
Kuznetsova holds serve. Sensational stuff.

1931: "Come on anna please win! She strikes the ball so well like hingis but has a better serve and better movement."
From anon via text on 81111

Kuznetsova 1-5 Chakvetadze
Chakvetadze holds to love as Kuznetsova puts absolutely no pressure on with the return.

1927: Well done everybody who noticed my grass/hard court error earlier on, I was just checking you all read that far down. Kuznetsova appears to be playing on blancmange at the moment.

Kuznetsova 1-4 Chakvetadze
Kuznetsova sticks a forehand out to slip break-point down. She then goes to Hawkeye and gets a line call overturned in her favour - definitely the highlight of the match so far. Kuznetsova swiftly makes another error and drops serve anyway.

Kuznetsova 1-3 Chakvetadze
Blimey. Chakvetadze gets to game point and throws in a second serve that needs a gust of breeze to get over the net. Kuznetsova steps in and duly thumps it into the tram lines. What time is the rugby on?

1919: "He's different class, and to go out and do that after a Grand Slam semi-final was just fabulous - it's what the crowd needs."
In the absence of anything decent from the women, Times correspondent Neil Harman discusses Novak Djokovic's impressions on 5live Sports Extra

Kuznetsova 1-2 Chakvetadze
It's a bit blustery on Arthur Ashe Stadium, which looks to be about two-thirds full. A bin on the side of the court blows over, which is about as close to drama as we've come so far. A couple of truly rotten forehands see Kuznetsova drop serve again - when' she's bad, she's really, really bad.

Kuznetsova 1-1 Chakvetadze
It's not exactly high-class stuff at the moment and Chakvetadze lets a 40-15 slip with some edgy stuff.

Kuznetsova 0-1 Chakvetadze
A woeful start from the 2004 champion Kuznetsova, who makes four errors on her way to dropping serve.

1905: Stand by for the first of the women's semi-finals at Flushing Meadows, and it's fair to say this is not the one that has captured the imagination of New Yorkers. It may be a different story in Moscow.

Kuznetsova has the experience and is a former champion, but Chakvetadze has been in better form this year having won four titles and rocketed up the rankings.

The head-to-head record is 2-0 in favour of Kuznetsova but this is their first meeting on hard courts. I'm already tiring of typing Kuznetsova and Chakvetadze, it could be nickname time. Text me your thoughts on the match on 81111 or use 606.
