606: DEBATE

Jankovic 6-2 7-6 Gajdosova
Gadjosova loses her cool at the worst possible moment, swinging wildly at everything under the sun. She goes 6-1 down and this time there's no way back for her.

Jankovic seals the match with a lovely backhand, but the third seed will know there's plenty of room for improvement.

Jankovic 6-2 6-6 Gajdosova
Jankovic takes the game and we're into a tie-break which looked less than likely 20 minutes ago. Can Gajdosova take the chance she hads worked so hard to give herself?

Jankovic 6-2 5-6 Gajdosova
Blimey. It's Gajdosova who now has the chance to take the second set after looking dead and buried a few minutes ago.

She goes from strength to strength to hold serve well and put the pressure right back on the third seed.

Jankovic 6-2 5-5 Gajdosova
Hats off to Gajdosova as she stays alive by breaking Jankovic's serve. She has to save another two match points - that's five in total - with some lovely defensive tennis. If only she had played with this precision in the first set, it could have been a different story.

Gajdosova benefits from a net cord going her way to seal the game, but you make your own luck in this game, don't you? Or is that just in football? Who knows?

Jankovic 6-2 5-4 Gajdosova
Gajdosova saves three match points and secures the game with her best tennis of the match. There's even a cheeky little volley in there for good measure. Who'd have thought it?

Jankovic 6-2 5-3 Gajdosova
Jankovic moves to within sight of the match with another hold. Some of Gajdosova's forehands from the back of the court are hit with stunning pace and power but the radar is a little awry, to say the least.

An exchange at the net ends with the desperately weak stab back from Gajdosova which Jankovic dispatches with one hand tied behind her back. We're up to 29 unforced errors now.

Jankovic 6-2 4-3 Gajdosova
Despite a string of unforced errors - 25 and counting - Gajdosova keeps her hopes alive with a service hold. The game is held thanks to a correct Hawk-Eye challenge on game point.

Jankovic 6-2 4-2 Gajdosova
Jankovic still isn't happy with her shoes for some reason, calling back the official for another look at her footwear as she wanders off.

It matters little though as Gajdosova self destructs, handing pretty much every point to her opponent.

Jankovic 6-2 3-2 Gajdosova
Gajdosova shows some good fighting spirit as she holds serve well. It's her most comfortable hold of the match so far, but has it come too late?

Jankovic 6-2 3-1 Gajdosova
The sound of Talking Heads classic "Once in a Lifetime" comes over the speakers as Jankovic gets her shoes looked at by a flunkey in the break between the games. Why don't they do that at Wimbledon?

When the action restarts, it's the same as it ever was. Jankovic holds serve comfortably to move two games clear again.

Jankovic 6-2 2-1 Gajdosova
A fourth double-fault, when trying to serve the game out, has Jankovic sink to her knees in exasperation.

Gajdosova is pounding away, but Jankovic gets so much back across the net that she fully deserves to get the break back. Her lobs back across Gajdosova expose the Slovakian's somewhat rudimentary volleying technique.

Jankovic 6-2 1-1 Gajdosova
Fair play to Gajdosova as he shows she can offer something to this match. She breaks serve for the first time, sealing the game with an inch-perfect passing shot that has Jankovic rooted to the spot.

Jankovic 6-2 1-0 Gajdosova
It's all or nothing from Gajdosova. She gives almost every shot a huge swing from the shoulders, but anything more subtle seems to be beyond her.

The unforced errors are undermining everything that Gajdosova is trying to do, and one horrible attempted drop shot sums up her experience so far.

Jankovic 6-2 Gajdosova
Jankovic sweeps 40-0 up before delivering her second double-fault of the match. A netted Jankovic backhand and a classy winner from Gajdosova take it to deuce, only for Gajdosova to go long twice in a row to hand the set to her opponent.

Jankovic 5-2 Gajdosova
Power is certainly not the problem for Gajdosova as she swings with abandon with the set all but over. She holds serve for the second time, but it's going to take a minor miracle for her to get back into the set.

Jankovic 5-1 Gajdosova
This set is quickly going Jankovic's way as she takes another game. One glorious forehand from Gajdosova leaves Jankovic statuesque in the middle of the court, but she does not back it up with anything else of note.

Jankovic 4-1 Gajdosova
It's a shame for Gajdosova as she gifts another game to her opponent. She looks a capable player, but is already showing a nasty habit of giving points and games away far too cheaply.

Jankovic 3-1 Gajdosova
Jankovic keeps two-games clear of her opponent, but the Slovakian is at least showing some better form now.

The heavy strapping on her left leg, starting just below the hem of her skirt and ended halfway down her calf, cannot be helping her movement at all.

Jankovic 2-1 Gajdosova
A better game from Gajdosova as she holds serve. It's not without a struggle though as she is forced to deuce twice before coming through.

She is showing that she can compete for power from the back of the court, but it's a bit hit-and-miss. Literally.

Jankovic 2-0 Gajdosova
Jankovic secures a comfortable service hold to maintain her early advantage. These two met at Wimbledon this year when Jankovic won 6-1 6-1, and I wouldn't be putting much of my hard-earned on the Slovakian based on the opening two games.

Jankovic 1-0 Gajdosova
Not an auspicious start for the 20-year-old Jarmila Gajdosova as she drops serve in her opening service game.

Two double-faults in a row leave her 30-0 down, and Jankovic barely needs to break sweat to get her opening game on the scoreboard.

1640: Right then, we're ready for the start of the final Grand Slam of the year.

We're kicking off with third seed Jelena Jankovic's first round meeting with Slovakia's Jarmila Gajdosova.
