Hewitt v Gaudio as it happened
French Open

Second round result:

L HEWITT Aus v G GAUDIO Arg

4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-2

GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES:

By Caroline Cheese

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-2 Gaudio
Hewitt hits 20 aces for the day to get to 40-0 and Gaudio responds with one last error. Hewitt comes back from two sets down for the fourth time in his career and goes on to face Mathieu Montcourt or Jarkko Nieminen.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 5-2 Gaudio
That game sort of sums up Gaudio's day. A gorgeous backhand - his 24th winner off that side - takes him to game point but he squanders it with an ridiculous attempt at a drop volley. He makes Hewitt serve it out though.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 5-1 Gaudio
Gaudio attempts an unnecessary through-the-legs winner - a sure sign that he's mentally on the flight home. Hewitt's 19th ace - an impressive stat - wraps up the game.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 4-1 Gaudio
Uh-oh, bad Gaudio is back. A double fault and a couple of poor mistakes leave Hewitt with two points for a double-break. An absolutely disastous double - the second serve is at least two foot long - puts Hewitt within sight of a memorable win.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 3-1 Gaudio
Hewitt holds to 30 and the Aussie looks in good shape.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 2-1 Gaudio
After that brief mental wander, Gaudio is back in business. This is very much like the fourth set - when Gaudio was unable to recover from an early break.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 2-0 Gaudio
Easy hold for Hewitt. Gaudio looks pretty dejected and you can understand why.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 1-0 Gaudio
Gaudio opens brightly with an ace but then it all goes horribly wrong. Two errors and the lamest double fault you'll ever see give Hewitt two break points and another mistake puts the Australian in control.

Fourth set

"Hopefully they've saved the best for last. It's difficult to predict a winner. I'd go slightly with Hewitt, but Gaudio showed in that last set he's back in the contest."
BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-4 Gaudio
At 0-15, Hewitt produces a tactically brilliant rally, moving his opponent around at will in an epic rally. Gaudio eventually succumbs and then makes an error on the next point. An ace takes Hewitt to set point and after belting a forehand winner, he bellows "come on" to wife Bec Cartwright. We're into a fifth-set shoot-out.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 5-4 Gaudio
And none there either as Gaudio holds to love. Pressure all on Hewitt now though.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 5-3 Gaudio
"That's it that's it," says Hewitt as he gets to within a game of taking it into a decider. No drama there.

"Win or lose today, the way Hewitt has played makes him a big threat on the grass at Wimbledon."
BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 4-3 Gaudio
A swinging wide first serve gets Gaudio to game point and a brave smash seals the game. I'm thinking there's drama to come before this set is out.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 4-2 Gaudio
Good hold from Hewitt, who is still getting the better of the long rallies.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 3-2 Gaudio
Gaudio is holding serve comfortably enough. His task now is to put pressure on Hewitt's. Intriguing part of the match this.

"The press room is full af Argentine journalists trying to keep track of their many players. I can't say they're too confident about Gaudio though - one just said 'I don't know what's going to go first, his head or his legs.'"
BBC Sport's Piers Newbery at Roland Garros

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 3-1 Gaudio
Hewitt has done well to respond to Gaudio's improvement. The Aussie holds to 15, finishing with a clinical ace.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 2-1 Gaudio
Finally, we have a match again. Gaudio is moving a bit more freely now and his backhand is back on form.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 2-0 Gaudio
He's back! Well almost. A 15th backhand winner sets Gaudio on his way to a break point but Hewitt survives - and there's the familiar "come on".

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 1-0 Gaudio
It's as you were. A ninth double fault puts Gaudio in trouble and a 10th gifts Hewitt the early break. The crowd are nearly silent - they're not sure what's going on here and neither am I. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic drops a set against Laurent Recouderc but is through to the third round.

Third set

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 6-2 Gaudio
The start of the fourth set should be interesting. Is Gaudio spent or is he just having a rest? He's hardly moving and is attempting some outrageous winners just to get the points over quickly. Hewitt will not have played an easier set of tennis.

"Gaudio's suffering because he's had a very poor year and just hasn't played that many matches. I have a feeling he'll bounce back in the fourth."
BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 5-2 Gaudio
Gaudio just looks drained and he's all but given this set away. Maybe he's waiting for a second wind.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 4-2 Gaudio
Worrying times for fans of Gaudio aka 'The Cat'. He seems to be napping at the moment. Hewitt's into double figures on aces.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 3-2 Gaudio
Gaudio's back to muttering at his coach but he hangs on to his serve when Hewitt sticks a return into the net.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 3-1 Gaudio
BBC Sport commentator Barry Davies is understating things when he says the "quality of tennis has dropped markedly". Gaudio's laughable attempt at a smash sums it up really.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 2-1 Gaudio
I'm rubbing my eyes because I think I just saw Gaudio make a mistake on the backhand side. Still, it's the three double faults that do for him in the end. The Argentine's gone for a mental walkabout. Hewitt must be delighted.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 1-1 Gaudio
Hewitt digs very deep to stay with Gaudio, despite double-faulting on his first game point.

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 0-1 Gaudio
No change in the balance of power at the start of the third set. Gaudio holds to love.

Second set

"The backhand and drop shot have just been exquisite from Gaudio."
BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

Hewitt 4-6 3-6 Gaudio
That's disheartening for Hewitt, letting slip a 40-15 lead. Guess what? Hewitt goes in on Gaudio's backhand and sees the ball inevitably fly past him and that's the second set.

Hewitt 4-6 3-5 Gaudio
Will Hewitt ever learn? He delivers a forehand straight into Gaudio's hitting zone on the backhand wing and there's only ever going to be one conclusion. Then he does it again.

Hewitt 4-6 3-4 Gaudio
That's a bit better from Hewitt as he steps into the court and begins to play a bit more aggressively. He holds to 30.

Hewitt 4-6 2-4 Gaudio
"Oh mate, I can't move," says Hewitt as he shanks a return. He doesn't even bother moving on the second point as Gaudio completely deceives him with a deadly drop shot. Two backhand winners later and it's a love game - the first of the match.

"I still think there's a lot more to come in this match. Hewitt's been pretty quiet so far but perhaps he's saving it for the battles ahead."
BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

Hewitt 4-6 2-3 Gaudio
I could watch Gaudio's backhand all day - and apparently so could Hewitt because he keeps on hitting to that side. Still, Hewitt holds with an ace.

Hewitt 4-6 1-3 Gaudio
Over on Suzanne Lenglen Court, Novak Djokovic has dropped the second set against French qualifier Laurent Recouderc so it's a set apiece. Gaudio digs out an incredible angled forehand to get to 40-0 and holds to 30.

Hewitt 4-6 1-2 Gaudio
Hewitt hangs on from deuce, whipping a forehand crosscourt to end a run of five games against.

Hewitt 4-6 0-2 Gaudio
Comfortable hold for Gaudio. Lleyton needs to find those famous fighting qualities.

Hewitt 4-6 0-1 Gaudio
Guillermo Vilas takes his seat as the second set gets under way. Vilas was the last Argentine winner of the men's French Open in 1977 before Gaudio triumphed in 2004. The last Aussie winner was 'Rocket' Rod Laver in 1969 and that's unlikely to change any time soon as Hewitt drops his serve.

First set

Hewitt 4-6 Gaudio
Nervy stuff. Gaudio dumps a routine forehand into the net and then double-faults to give Hewitt a break point. No problem for Gaudio though, he just gives that gorgeous backhand a swing and nabs the first set.

"Lleyton Hewitt has played a good set so far but Gaudio's backhand is just exceptional. I think that's the one mistake Lleyton has made - he's given Gaudio the chance to find his rhythm on that side."
BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

Hewitt 4-5 Gaudio
I've got a bit of advice for Lleyton: don't hit to Gaudio's backhand. A belter down the line and onto the baseline sets up two break points. The Argentine makes a mess of the first one and directs some more chat at his coach, who just laughs. An epic 36-shot rally ends with Hewitt netting a backhand and Gaudio will serve for the set.

Hewitt 4-4 Gaudio
Gaudio is chatting away to his coach. Not sure what he's chuntering on about. Still, he ends the game smiling when he gets lucky with a net cord and we're still on serve.

Hewitt 4-3 Gaudio
Thanks Piers (see below) for rubbing a bit of salt in the wound. I was at Roland Garros yesterday. It drizzled pretty much all day - except when it was really tipping down. Hewitt holds.

"The sun is out and it's actually warm for the first time this week. For anyone who bought tickets for the first four days it must be pretty galling to look at Philippe Chatrier Court today."
BBC Sport's Piers Newbery at Roland Garros

Hewitt 3-3 Gaudio
Hewitt squanders two break points. That's three that have come and gone now.

Hewitt 3-2 Gaudio
Hewitt plays roulette by going in on Gaudio's backhand - and predictably loses. But he hangs on after a deuce game, and we get our first "come on" of the day.

Hewitt 2-2 Gaudio
Hewitt's volleying has been impeccable so far. A stunning drop volley takes him to 30-30 and he gets to break point when Gaudio dumps a forehand in the net. The Argentine gets out of trouble with a wickedly angled backhand.

Hewitt 2-1 Gaudio
The shock appearance of the sun upsets Hewitt and he belts a smash long. A double fault puts him break point down but a cool ace gets him out of a spot of bother. Roughly 50 people in the crowd now.

Hewitt 1-1 Gaudio
Hewitt beckons the umpire down from the chair to take a look at a second serve but no joy for the Aussie, it's just scraped the line. Gaudio wraps up the game with a backhand down the line.

Hewitt 1-0 Gaudio
We could be in for a long one if that first game is anything to go by. Hewitt holds with a delicious angled volley.

1009 BST: Hewitt and Gaudio have played six times and they've won three apiece. The Aussie will serve first.

1007 BST: Still, at least the sun's decided to make a rare appearance at Roland Garros.

1001 BST: Hewitt and Gaudio step out onto Chatrier Court. I estimate there are about three people in the crowd to greet them.
