Federer returns with win in Miami
Roger Federer
Federer lost for the first time since August two weeks ago
World number one Roger Federer got back to winning ways with a 6-4 6-3 win over US wildcard Sam Querrey at the Miami Masters on Saturday.

It was his first match since a 41-match winning streak was broken by Guillermo Canas in Indian Wells two weeks ago.

Elsewhere, ninth seed Tommy Haas lost to Colombia's Alejandro Falla, while Ivan Ljubicic and David Nalbandian won.

"I'm just happy I came through, because I didn't know what to expect tonight," said Federer.

"I didn't know my opponent. I've known since a long time when I'm going to play, so (there were) kind of a bit of expectations, too, from the fans and everybody."

If I win one or two more matches and get more confidence, maybe I can be dangerous

David Nalbandian

Federer, who was watched once again by Tiger Woods, could face Canas again in the last 16 after the Argentine defeated Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-5.

Haas saw his run of good form grind to a halt as he was easily beaten 6-4 6-4 in the second round by Falla, ranked 95 in the world.

Elsewhere, Richard Gasquet recovered from a second-set pasting to defeat fellow Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 6-4 0-6 6-2.

Ivan Ljubicic also comfortably saw off Filippo Volandri 6-3 6-3, while David Nalbandian beat Vince Spadea 6-3 6-4.

"Today was tough conditions, all windy and everything," said Nalbandian. "If I win one or two more matches and get more confidence, maybe I can be dangerous."

Nalbandian will next take on Jarkko Nieminen, who handed out a rare double bagel to Evgeny Korolev, beating him 6-0 6-0.

  • Britain's Tim Henman and partner Yves Allegro were beaten 6-4 6-4 by fourth seeds Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett in the men's doubles.
