Top seed Fernando Gonzalez was made to work by unseeded Frenchman Olivier Patience before reaching the last eight at the Movistar Open in Vina del Mar.
The Chilean, making the transition to clay after reaching the Australian Open final on Rebound Ace last week, came through 5-7 6-0 6-4.
Gonzalez will next face seventh seed Albert Montanes, a 6-3 7-5 winner over fellow Spaniard Oscar Hernandez.
Igor Andreev, Carlos Berlocq and Martin Vasallo Arguello also won on Thursday.
