GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

By Caroline Cheese

Third set:

Federer 6-4 6-0 6-2 Roddick
Federer wraps it up in less than an hour and a half. John Lloyd said it all really - I have never seen a better performance.

"This is the greatest performance I've seen by an individual."
BBC Sport's John Lloyd

Federer 6-4 6-0 5-2 Roddick
Every point Roddick wins is greeted by the most enormous cheer and you have to give him every credit for coming through that game. At 40-15 he sticks a volley in the net after some incredible retrieving by Federer but hits back with a huge serve.

Federer 6-4 6-0 5-1 Roddick
Roddick challenges a call - and gets it wrong. Says it all. Federer is a game away from the final.

"Has Federer played better than this in a Grand Slam match? I don't think so."
BBC Sport's Chris Bailey

Federer 6-4 6-0 4-1 Roddick
Another phenomenal forehand pass leaves Roddick break point down and Federer delivers what must be the final blow with a backhand pass.

Federer 6-4 6-0 3-1 Roddick
Fed is untouchable. He challenges after a serve down the 'T' is called wide and is proved right. Don't think he's got one wrong all night. Roddick goes to high-five the linesman, appreciating the attempt to help him out.

Federer 6-4 6-0 2-1 Roddick
Someone in the crowd has just told Roddick to "remember the Alamo". Interesting. Perhaps he does, because he finally gets on the board after 11 games against him. The roar from the crowd is deafening.

"If this match were being played on water, Roddick would be drowning while Federer would be walking on it."
BBC Sport's Chris Bailey

Federer 6-4 6-0 2-0 Roddick
Federer fies down his eighth ace to consolidate that early break. He can't win another one 6-0 can he?

Federer 6-4 6-0 1-0 Roddick
As coach Connors would say, Roddick needs to 'grind it out' here - and the American's errors are contributing to his downfall. Federer breaks again with a delicious forehand pass.

Second set:

"One unforced error in that set from Federer. That was frightening. Andy Roddick's confidence is disintegrating by the second - he won only six points in the second set."
BBC Sport's John Lloyd

Federer 6-4 6-0 Roddick
Roddick gets the biggest cheer of the night after unleashing his first forehand winner - a telling stat. It doesn't do him any good, as Federer completes a near-perfect set in 22 minutes.

Federer 6-4 5-0 Roddick
Roddick mutters angrily to himself - something about Federer having an answer to everything. The world number one proves it with a backhand pass to break again. To add to the American's misery, he gets a warning after belting a ball with such venom, the racquet slips out of his hand and nearly hits a photographer.

Federer 6-4 4-0 Roddick
No one was expecting that - Federer actually stuck a forehand into the net. It's his only abberration of course.

"It's mind-boggling. We're lucky to be in the presence of pure and utter genius."
BBC Sport's John Lloyd

Federer 6-4 3-0 Roddick
A miraculous backhand pass off a ferocious Roddick forehand gets Federer off to the perfect start and this is turning into another masterclass from the defending champion. If this was Wimbledon, you'd be hoping for rain to save Roddick.

Federer 6-4 2-0 Roddick
Roddick bears the look of a desperate man, continually sending despairing glances to Connors and his support camp. Love game for Federer.

Federer 6-4 1-0 Roddick
Roddick makes a horrible start to the second set. He seems to be trying too hard and three errors in a row hand Federer an early break.

First set:

Federer 6-4 Roddick
Federer wraps up a love service game with an ace and it doesn't look good for Roddick now.

"Roddick's problem is that he doesn't stick the first volley away often enough. Federer knows if he draws Roddick in, he will get a second chance more often than not."
BBC Sport's John Lloyd

Federer 5-4 Roddick
That's how quickly things turn around against the world number one. Federer will serve for the set after a thrilling net exchange on break point ends with Roddick poking a backhand volley wide.

Federer 4-4 Roddick
Federer makes his first challenge of the night to begin the game and looks pretty disgusted with the call. He's right to be - his volley is bang on the line - and the top seed goes on to record love service game of the match.

Federer 3-4 Roddick
Jimbo is clenching his fist in the stands and shouting his approval as Roddick holds to 30, thanks to a wayward forehand from Federer.

Federer 3-3 Roddick
This is a very erratic start from Federer - one minute brilliant, next extremely average. Not sure Roddick knows what to make of it all. An ace ensures the world number one stops a run of three games against him.

Federer 2-3 Roddick
Roddick gets his forehand firing to recover from 0-30 down to game point. Approving looks from coach Jimmy Connors.

Federer 2-2 Roddick
Federer hands Roddick a break on a plate. The world number one looks in control at 30-0 but four errors in a row bring the American back into the match. Roddick didn't really do anything there.

Federer 2-1 Roddick
Roddick shows off his improving net play with two winning volleys in the game. Better from the American but it's his return he needs to find now.

Federer 2-0 Roddick
Roddick pegs Federer back from 40-0 to 40-30 but the world number one gets out of trouble with a first serve out wide.

Federer 1-0 Roddick
Disaster for Roddick. Federer rifles a pass down the line to bring up break point and Roddick mishits a forehand.

0843 GMT: The umpire calls time and we're about to get under way.

0837 GMT: Roddick just about gets the loudest cheer as they make their entrances. The American also wins the toss and opts to serve. A good start all round for the sixth seed.

0833 GMT: The players carry out one last television interview before heading out on court. Roger Federer says he always enjoys playing Andy Roddick - not surprising when you consider his 12-1 record.
