Kim Clijsters began her last year on the professional tour in ideal fashion, beating Maria Sharapova to win the Champions Challenge in Hong Kong.
Clijsters says she will retire at the end of the year
Sharapova came up with a string of fine passing shots, but Clijsters proved too strong as she won 6-3 7-6 (10-8).
The Belgian, just 23, is now in upbeat mood ahead of the Australian Open.
"My strength is something I don't have to worry about, so I can concentrate on those other things that need work," said the former world number one.
