Top seed Amelie Mauresmo was knocked out of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow by Czech Republic's Nicole Vaidisova.
Vaidisova, the eighth seed, came from a set down to seal a 1-6 7-5 7-6 victory over the world number one from France.
She will now play Nadia Petrova in the semi-finals after the Russian beat compatriot Vera Zvonareva 7-5 6-1.
In the other semi, Anna Chakvetadze, who received a walkover against the injured Maria Sharapova, will play fellow Russian Elena Dementieva.
Second seed Sharapova received a first-round bye but said she felt pain in her right hip after her second round win over Russia's Ekaterina Bychkova on Wednesday.
The world number three and US Open champion said: "I couldn't practice or even walk yesterday. I have to pull out. I'm really disappointed but I have no choice."
Fourth seed Dementieva beat Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, the sixth seed, 7-6(6) 7-6(1).
