Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 6-2 Williams
The crowd try to lift Williams, but her lack of match fitness has caught up with her. The match ends with a thrilling rally, which Mauresmo wins with a deft angled volley. Relief for the world number one, who would have been desperate to prove her ranking does not lie.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 5-2 Williams
Any time a rally goes long, Williams makes a tired mistake. The game looks up for the former champion - but she is renowned for her fighting spirit so you can never count her out.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 4-2 Williams
A gruelling game which seems to have taken its toll on Williams. An epic baseline rally ends with the American dumping a backhand into the net and several more long exchanges go Mauresmo's way. That must have been demoralising for Williams - can she fight back?

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 3-2 Williams
Mauresmo is beginning to look threatening now as she moves ahead in the set.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 2-2 Williams
This match isn't particularly pretty but it is close. You just don't know which way it's going to go.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 2-1 Williams
Mauresmo gives a yell and clenches her fist. She's only held serve but that's quite an achievement for the Frenchwoman at the moment.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 1-1 Williams
Easy hold for Williams - and she piles the pressure right back on Mauresmo.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 1-0 Williams
Mauresmo needs to go back to the tactics that won her the first set, ie keeping Williams in the rallies for as long as possible. She shows signs of the fog clearing in this game - stopping a run of six against her.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-6 Williams
Mauresmo is still bouncing about, exuding plenty of positive body language, but it's not showing in her play. Williams delivers the bagel.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-5 Williams
Venus is still fiddling with her nails but she looks up to see her sister plant a magnificent lob over Mauresmo's head. Williams will serve for the set.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-4 Williams
Mauresmo has won four points in this set. It's baffling - even Serena looks a little surprised by this turn of events.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-3 Williams
Williams is huffing and puffing a little, which doesn't bode well for her chances if this does go to a decider. Still, she's being helped by some pretty awful tennis from Mauresmo.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-2 Williams
Williams consolidates her advantage. Mauresmo needs to regain her focus quickly.

Mauresmo 6-4 0-1 Williams
Williams seizes the initiative straight away by breaking. Was that Mauresmo easing up a little? Very dangerous against the former world number one.

Mauresmo 6-4 Williams
Mauresmo sneaks the set with some impressive play from the baseline. Williams' fitness will be put to the test now.

Mauresmo 5-4 Williams
Williams is wearing her Asian-influence purple dress again. She predicts purple will be a "a really hot colour this fall". Mauresmo holds to 30 as we reach crunch time in this set.

Mauresmo 4-4 Williams
The first serve-forehand one-two punch from Williams gets her to game point and she's level again.

Mauresmo 4-3 Williams
Williams takes the frustration of the last game out on the ball. It's a brutal game from the American, hitting Mauresmo with a volley at one point, and she breaks right back.

Mauresmo 4-2 Williams
The first point Serena drops on serve is a double fault and the American is rattled. She finds herself 0-40 down and some fabulous net play from Mauresmo gives her first blood.

Mauresmo 3-2 Williams
Williams' awesome start forces Mauresmo to go for too much. The top seed's attempt at a down-the-line winner drops wide and the American has a break point. Mauresmo nails a stunning forehand though and survives.

Mauresmo 2-2 Williams
Williams completes a second love service game with an ace. Impressive stuff from the former champion.

Mauresmo 2-1 Williams
No surprise in Williams' tactics: hit every ball as hard as possible. But Mauresmo is weathering the storm nicely at the moment. She punches the air as a Williams backhand lands long, moving the Frenchwoman ahead again.

Mauresmo 1-1 Williams
Williams completes the game with a booming serve down the 'T'. It doesn't impress sister Venus who sits fiddling with her nails.

Mauresmo 1-0 Williams
Well if the first game is anything to go be, we're in for a cracker. Williams rips a forehand winner crosscourt but Mauresmo responds with a belting backhand down the line. The world number one holds.

World number one Amelie Mauresmo is seeking her third Grand Slam title of the year but faces a mammoth task against a fit-again Serena Williams.

Williams, playing in only her fourth tournament this season, is unseeded but she has made a mockery of that status with some dominant displays in New York.

Mauresmo, meanwhile, was unconvincing as she battled to a three-set win over unknown Italian Mara Santangelo in the previous round.
