Gamewatch: Serra v Roddick
US Open first round result:

F Serra v A RODDICK (9)

2-6 1-6 3-6

(seedings in brackets)

GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

Third set:

Serra 3-6 Roddick
There is more bickering from Roddick and the crowd show their feelings as they boo and hiss. All this is not helping Serra who slides to 15-40 and Roddick wraps up the match albeit on a sour note.

Serra 3-5 Roddick
Roddick gets a line call against him and immediately goes to the chair to remonstrate with the umpire. He gets so wound up that he ends up lamely conceding a break to Serra and shouts to the umpire: "You should be embarrassed."

Serra 2-5 Roddick
Serra gets another game on the board but Roddick will come out of his chair to serve for the match.

Serra 1-5 Roddick
The predictable thump of aces hitting the backboard of the courts sees Roddick edge ahead and he holds to 15.

Serra 1-4 Roddick
The Frenchman seems to have lost his way as he hands the American two more break points. Roddick fails to capitalise and the game goes to deuce. But Serra is his own worst enemy as he puts the ball wide twice to put Roddick to within two games of a place in the second round.

Serra 1-3 Roddick
Roddick builds on the break with a service game to love.

Serra 1-2 Roddick
The American goes head-to-head with Serra in a long rally but comes out on top to move to 0-30. The writing could be on the wall for Serra as a double fault hands Roddick three break points. Some inaccurate play from the ninth seed sees him lose all three. But Roddick shows quick hands at the net to finally take the crucial break and goes back to his chair with fists pumping.

Serra 1-1 Roddick
There is a little lull in the match but Roddick remains steady and holds. The rest of the match has been played at such a high tempo that there has not even been an hour's play yet.

Serra 1-0 Roddick
Serra starts off the third set with a comfortable service game - the first time he has gone ahead in the match. It is now or never if he is to turn round the match.

Second set:

Serra 1-6 Roddick
Roddick hardly takes time to catch his breath as he turns round and begins serving at Serra. The Frenchman is up to the challenge and takes two break points - his first of the match. But he wastes the first with a reckless shot on the run and then watches an ace fly past his shoulder. Another error from Serra sees Roddick wrap up the game and the match.

Over on Court Six, Dominik Hrbaty has become the first seed to fall, losing 7-5 6-1 6-3 to unseeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

Serra 1-5 Roddick
A flighted forehand from Roddick dips over the set and Serra cannot reach it in time and slides to 0-30. The Frenchman releases a brilliant backhand down the line at 15-40 but he follows that up with an error and Roddick breaks again.

Serra 1-4 Roddick
A lapse in concentration sees Roddick slide to deuce but once again he pulls an ace out of his sleeve to move to advantage. Serra does a good job to take it back to deuce but Roddick recovers to hold.

Serra 1-3 Roddick
Serra produces a better service game to get on the board. The 25-year-old beat Xavier Malisse to win a tournament in Adelaide earlier this year so is more than capable of hitting form on his day.

Serra 0-3 Roddick
It is 12 points and seven games in a row as Roddick holds without dropping a single point.

Serra 0-2 Roddick
Serra is huffing and puffing with the effort of each shot now, which surely does not bode well for the Frenchman. He lets out a breath and rolls his eyes as he hands the American three break points. And the Frenchman whacks the ball into the post to gift the ninth seed the break.

Serra 0-1 Roddick
Roddick looks like a man of a mission now - and the crowd are getting behind him too. He makes a good start to the second set, taking the first game with an ace.

First set:

Serra 2-6 Roddick
Serra shrugs his shoulders as he goes long to hand Roddick a set point after 26 minutes. And the Frenchman makes another mistake on the forehand to hand Roddick a comfortable first set.

Serra 2-5 Roddick
Roddick is full of energy now as he takes a 5-2 lead.

There is disappointment for an expectant crowd over on Grandstand as American hope, 17-year-old Donald Young, crashes out 6-4 3-6 0-6 1-6 to Andy Murray's pal, Serbian Novak Djokovic.

Serra 2-4 Roddick
Serra lets two points slip at 0-30 and Roddick is handed two break points. The Frenchman does well to save deuce but thumps the ball into the net to give the American advantage and Roddick ends a rally with a smash to break. He seems happy about it too, judging by the "Yeeeessss" he lets out.

Serra 2-3 Roddick
Roddick's coach Jimmy Connors lets out a sneaky yawn as his charge has not quite got into the groove yet. Serra clips a forehand right on the line at 40-15 but Roddick shuts him out with an ace to stay on track.

Serra 2-2 Roddick
Home favourite Roddick may be on court and new coach Jimmy Connors may be watching closely courtside BUT that does not mean the New York crowd will perk up. Serra levels things up with another competent game.

Serra 1-2 Roddick
The famous Roddick serve is back as he fires down a big one at 136mph to hold to love.

Serra 1-1 Roddick
Serra looks like he won't be a pushover for the 2003 champion as he plays some solid tennis to hold.

Serra 0-1 Roddick
Roddick looks pretty good as he powers to the first game and his campaign gets under way.

Build-up:

Andy Roddick was the last American to win the US Open title, triumphant in 2003, and looks to have returned to form just in time for the tournament.

The world number 10, who credits his turnaround to his new partnership with eight-time Grand Slam winner Jimmy Connors, claimed his first title of 2006 with victory in the Cincinnati Masters.

Roddick, who celebrates his 24th birthday on Wednesday, is playing Frenchman Florent Serra for the first time.

Serra makes his second trip to the US Open after reaching the second round in 2005.
