A MURRAY GB v A CLEMENT Fra

6-7 (3-7) 2-6

GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

By Sophie Brown

Second set:

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 2-5 Clement
A victory of sorts for Murray as he successfully challenges a call and raises his arms in mock triumph. But Clement gets the win that matters, saving two break points before clinching the title with his first match point.

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 2-5 Clement
Murray produces his best service game for some time. A couple more aces take his tally to nine and he holds emphatically. Surely it's too late...

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 1-5 Clement
There's a glimmer of hope for Murray fans as Clement begins his service game with his first double fault of the match. But it proves a false dawn and the Frenchman goes on to hold.

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 1-4 Clement
Nothing's working for Murray - even his challenge of a call proves to be well wide of the mark. But he does at least hold serve to get on the board in the second set/

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 0-4 Clement
Murray's mood is now as black as Clement's shades. The Frenchman enjoys a comfortable hold. All he needs to do is keep in the ball in play and Murray's erratic play will do the rest.

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 0-3 Clement
Murray's shoulders droop in that teenager-like way as another unforced error puts him 15-40 down. He then mistimes a straightforward forehand to go a double-break down.

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 0-2 Clement
Murray yells in frustration as another error comes out of his racquet. Clement holds serve and Murray calls for the trainer, who comes out to treat his right hand.

Murray 6-7 (3-7) 0-1 Clement
Clement has ditched his purple bandana for a white one. Maybe Murray should have swapped his cap as he makes several unforced errors. The Scottish teenager saves three break points but can't pull it out for a fourth. Clement is now a set and a break up - for Murray to come back from that in this heat would be some achievement.

First set:

Murray 6-7 (3-7) Clement
Murray plays a twitchy tiebreak and after a couple of unforced errors, which leave him muttering furiously to himself, he finds himself facing three set points. Clement snaffles the set with a superb pass off what looks as if it is going to be a Murray winner.

Murray 6-6 Clement
Murray holds serve to force a tiebreak. Clement makes the first line-call challenge of the match when his approach shot after a marathon rally is called long. The hawk-eye replay shows that the ball was indeed well out - Clement probably just fancied a bit of a breather after his exertions.

Murray 5-6 Clement
Clement is looking the more solid player at the moment as he polishes off another service game. Murray keeps peering anxiously down at his fingers. Presumably it's a blister rather than a broken nail.

Murray 5-5 Clement
Gilbert briefly stops chatting to applaud a Murray ace that levels the set at five games all.

Murray 4-5 Clement
Clement ends the run of breaks and takes the lead for the first time in the match. At each changeover, the PA cranks up with an annoyingly chirpy American delivering "a message from our sponsors." It wouldn't happen at the All England Club...

Murray 4-4 Clement
A couple of loose shots from Murray and he's 15-40 down. Clement then rips a backhand across the court for the third successive break of serve.

Murray 4-3 Clement
Murray bounces straight back with some superb returning to re-establish his lead.

Murray 3-3 Clement
Twice Murray double-faults at deuce to give Clement a break point. He gets away with the first one but then hooks wildly at a forehand and it's all square in the match.

Murray 3-2 Clement
After the opening-game blip, Clement has found his service rhythm and holds without a problem.

Murray 2-1 Clement
Brad Gilbert is back in his seat but still yapping away to a companion. Murray has begun in good rhythm and a 128mph ace - his second of the match - helps him to hold serve easily.

Murray 2-1 Clement
Murray has to do lots of chasing down balls but it's all to no avail as Clement, who is wearing a purple bandana and huge sunglasses, holds serve.

Murray 2-0 Clement
Murray's coach Brad Gilbert seems pretty relaxed about things, giving a courtside interview to a TV broadcaster as the players swap ends after the first game. His confidence doesn't look misplaced as Murray races through his opening service game.

Murray 1-0 Clement
It's 31C on court in Washington and Murray proves too hot for Clement in the opening game, clinching it when the Frenchman hits wide at 30-40.
