Top seed Kim Clijsters saw off the challenge of Vera Zvonareva to reach the last four of the Bank of the West Classic in California.
The Belgian won 6-2 3-6 6-1 and will now play third seed Nicole Vaidisova in the semi-finals.
Czech player Vaidisova, 17, overwhelmed Australian Samantha Stosur 6-4 6-2.
The other semi-final will be between second seed Patty Schnyder and Tatiana Golovin of France who upset fourth seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-4 7-6.
Left-handed Swiss player Schnyder beat American veteran Jill Craybas 6-4 7-5.
Three-time champion Clijsters confortably won the first set against Zvonareva but then the Russian hit back in the second.
But Zvonareva, who won last week's WTA tournament in Cincinnati, lost her way in the decider, allowing Clijsters to break twice in a row and claim victory..
