In-form Vera Zvonareva booked a last eight meeting with top seed Kim Clijsters after beating Nathalie Dechy at the Bank of the West Classic.
Russian Zvonareva won 7-6 (7-5) 6-0 and now faces Belgian Clijsters, who beat her in the first round at Wimbledon.
Also into the quarter-finals of the California event is second seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.
Third and fourth seeds Nicole Vaidisova and Anna-Lena Groenefeld also advanced into the last eight.
Unseeded Zvonareva, who won her second title of the season at the Cincinnati Open last week, had to work hard in the first set before storming through the second.
"It was a tough first set," she said. "(Dechy) was playing
really well and I got lucky in the tiebreaker.
"I was able to come back from 3-1 down (in the tiebreak) which
gave me momentum in the second set. I felt like I was cruising in
the second set."
Schnyder beat Japanese qualifier Akiko Morigami 6-1 6-4 and now faces American veteran Jill Craybas.
Czech teenager Vaidisova beat Austrian Sybille Bammer to set up a match with Australian Samantha Stosur.
And German player Groenefeld will play Tatiana Golovin of France after beating Russian qualifier Vasilisa Bardina 6-3 7-5.
