6-1 6-4

GAME-BY-GAME UPDATES

By Tom Fordyce

Second set:

Sharapova 6-4 Dementieva
It's all over - Sharapova is too good for her compatriot, and she serves out the game to love. Father Yuri blows kisses at the sky as his daughter drapes a colourful towel over her shoulders like a title-winning prize-fighter and waves at the crowd. Despite that brief rally, Dementieva was never really in the match.

"Sharapova played much better today than she has all tournament. She feels so at home on Centre Court." Tracy Austin, BBC Sport summariser.

Sharapova 5-4 Dementieva
Gutsy tennis from Dementieva. When she lets a 30-0 lead slip, Sharapova gets ready to pounce - but Dementieva winds up her first serve and then hits two fine backhands to stay in the match. Will Sharapova hold her own serve to take the win? She sits on her chair at the changeover, staring at the turf by her feet with a look of intense concentration on her face.

Sharapova 5-3 Dementieva
Dementieva won't take defeat easily. She sets up two break points and is unlucky to see a very marginal Sharapova serve called good. On the second break point, Sharapova misses her first serve - but Dementieva puts her forehand wide and the chance goes begging. When Sharapova serves out the game, she lets out a yell of triumph - she knows how important that game could turn out to be.

Sharapova 4-3 Dementieva
Hello - could this be the start of a comeback? Dementieva holds serve to love, the first time that she's done so all match.

"Sharapova looks like she's trying to rush this." Jimmy Connors, BBC Sport summariser.

Sharapova 4-2 Dementieva
Could this be a lifeline for Dementieva? It's Sharapova's turn to let her serve go to pot - two double faults gift Dementieva back one break. Thoughts turn to the streaker - where is he now? How long does it take for the buzz of a streak to wear off? What happens if they can't find any clothes to fit you? Who looks after your own discarded garments?

Sharapova 4-1 Dementieva
Did that interruption in the last game shake Dementieva out of her torpor? She wins her first game in eight, at last holding serve, to roars of approval from the Centre Court crowd. Perhaps she can find something here to cheer her up before she takes solace with the large collection of cacti she keeps at her Moscow home.

Sharapova 4-0 Dementieva
A gift from the gods for a man writing game-by-game updates - a streaker! A dark-haired young man sprints onto the court, waves at the delighted crowd and performs a dramatic cartwheel right in front of Sharapova. The Russian is dismissive - she turns her back without even a hint of colour in her cheeks. Her naked suitor has a large red sheet thrown over him by security guards and is hustled off court before he can even ask for an unusual autograph.

Sharapova 3-0 Dementieva
Unless Dementieva can do something about her serve, this match is going to be over very shortly. She is broken again. Sharapova marches around court with a steely look on her face - you won't find any mercy there.

Sharapova 2-0 Dementieva
The crowd are sympathetic to Dementieva's plight. They are willing her to put up a better fight, but Sharapova is in no mood to let her back into the match. Apparently Sharapova is also a big fan of the Pippi Longstocking books, although today she's paired her dress with nothing more than ankle socks.

Sharapova 1-0 Dementieva
Disastrous start from Dementieva - more woeful serving gives Sharapova three break points. She then puts a forehand into the net, and her task just got a whole lot harder. How she must wish she were at home with her much-loved Yorkshire terrier, who believe it or not is called Patrick. Strange name for a dog, but there you go.

First set:

Sharapova 6-1 Dementieva
Wallop - Sharapova seals the first set in just over half an hour. It's all too easy for her at the moment. A big fan of Sherlock Holmes, she must feel like she's starring in The Strange Case Of The Misfiring Opponent.

Sharapova 5-1 Dementieva
Uh-oh - Dementieva's serve is wobbling. She's only succeeding with 50% of her first serves, and at break point down, she feebly double-faults. She's not giving herself a chance to unleash her lethal crosscourt forehand. She has a pre-match superstition that her mother should never wish her good luck before she steps on court - perhaps Vera accidentally let something slip out today.

Sharapova 4-1 Dementieva
Too easy for Maria. She wins her service game to love, and her grunt-squeak gets just a little louder.

Sharapova 3-1 Dementieva
At last - Dementieva is on the scoreboard. Her second serve is still an absolute gift for Sharapova, but when her first serve goes in she can take control of the point. She too has a parent-coach in the stands - her mother Vera, who to be honest is looking rather pensive.

Sharapova 3-0 Dementieva
Dementieva might be yet to win a game, but she pushed Sharapova hard in that one, hauling the number four seed back to deuce three times. Sharapova's father and coach Yuri looks relieved when she finally seals the game.

Sharapova 2-0 Dementieva
Sharapova strikes - Dementieva goes long with a forehand at break point against, and the game is gone. It's a fearsome slugfest out there at the moment. Interestingly, Sharapova has apparently grown two inches in the past year. At 6ft 2ins, she's probably hoping it stops there. What happens if she keeps adding two inches every year? It's a nightmarish thought - although having arms like Mr Tickle's would certainly help her court coverage.

Sharapova 1-0 Dementieva
A tight game to start us off - Sharapova loses the first two points on her serve, but then comes storming back. She saves a break point when Dementieva goes long and takes the game with a nicely-angled cross-court forehand. Both players get their grunt-squeaks going from the start. Sharapova's - the more infamous of the two - is slightly louder at the moment, but Dementieva's is still loud enough to scare young children.

1301 BST: There's movement at the players' entrance - the Russians are coming. They step onto Centre Court, both wearing white sun visors.

"It's going to be a very hard-hitting match. The heat is making the courts play a lot slower - and that could be a problem for Sharapova." Tracy Austin, BBC Sport summariser.

1255 BST: It's one of those strange summer days when, despite temperatures being so hot you break into a sweat while raising your eyebrows, the sun isn't actually shining. I suppose a weather expert might describe it as humid.
