Stella Artois Championships

Third-round result:

T HENMAN (GB) bt N MAHUT (Fra)

6-3 6-4

Game-by-game updates:

Second set:

Henman 6-4 Mahut
Henman looks more focused as he moves to 30-0. He has three match points as Mahmut scoops the ball wide and he finishes it with a cool ace to advance to the last eight.

Henman 5-4 Mahut
There are some loose shots from both players but Mahut moves to 40-15 and dips the ball into space to hold as Henman loses his momentum.

"You can have one or two loose points but Henman should not have lost that service game. It was a lapse in concentration and grass can be dangerous so he must get back on form."
Former Wimbledon champion and BBC analysist Michael Stich.

Henman 5-3 Mahut
A couple of errors from Henman sees him let Mahut back in at 30-30. He again nicks the ball wide at 30-40 and Mahut makes him pay as he steals a break back.

Henman 5-2 Mahut
Henman is in full flow as he edges to 0-40. The Briton seals his second break with a delicate lob.

Henman 4-2 Mahut
A lovely overhead shot from Henman takes him to 40-0 and he moves closer to the quarter-finals as he holds without conceding a point for the second game in a row.

Henman 3-2 Mahut
The tempo of the match seems to have upped a little - though the crowd remain a little subdued as the stands at Queen's Club are still not full. Henman takes the game to deuce as he knocks the ball directly at Mahut, who is stranded at the net. The Frenchman hands the British number three advantage as he nets the ball and does likewise to give him the vital break too.

"Henman is relaxed and comfortable out there. He is going for his shots and that is what he has to do. He is smart and experienced on grass and he is showing it out there."
Former Wimbledon champion and BBC analysist Michael Stich.

Henman 2-2 Mahut
Henman scoops the ball over for 15-0 and looks strong as he lashes a forehand down the line. Mahut shouts out as he whacks the ball long and Henman levels again.

Henman 1-2 Mahut
Mahmut looks a little more determined as he chases round the court to counter Henman's returns. The 24-year-old loops the ball long at 30-30 but a solid serve into the body and another skewed return from Henman sees the Frenchman hold.

Henman 1-1 Mahut
A little carelessness from Henman takes him to 15-15. But a long, wide serve and a dipped backhand move him to 40-15. A neat exchange sees Mahut sail the ball over for 40-30 but Henman holds.

Henman 0-1 Mahut
Mahut steadies himself as he moves to 40-0 but a decisive Henman recovers two points. The French qualifier hangs on though as the British number three scuffs the ball into the net.

First set:

Henman 6-3 Mahut
Mahut looks under pressure as he struggles to respond to Henman's good groundstrokes. The Briton has three set points but the Frenchman saves one before Henman fires an ace to take the set after 33 minutes.

Henman 5-3 Mahut
Henman whips the ball down the line to edge to 0-15 and then Mahut nets the ball at 0-30. Henman lashes the ball to the corner to gather three break points but Mahut saves all three. The Frenchman clips the ball into the tramlines for a second deuce and Henman takes advantage with a cross-court winner before Mahut sends the ball long to hand Henman the break.

Henman 4-3 Mahut
Henman is untroubled too as, apart from a double fault, the British number three holds. His serves look very encouraging and he hits his fastest one of the match so far in that game at 120mph.

Henman 3-3 Mahut
Still no sign of the first break point of the match, as both players remain consistent during their service games. Henman flings the ball wide at 40-15 and fails to return the ball as Mahut holds.

Henman 3-2 Mahut
Henman sends a rasping forehand into the corner of the court past Mahut to move to 30-0. The Briton takes the game as the qualifier pumps the ball into the net.

Henman 2-2 Mahut
Mahut fires down an ace to open up his account and defies Henman with another potent serve. The Frenchman, who won the junior Wimbledon title six years ago, looks comfortable on grass as he holds.

Henman 2-1 Mahut
More good work at the net from Henman as he gets forward to take the first point. A double fault from the British number three hands the Frenchman a point but Henman wraps up the game.

Henman 1-1 Mahut
Mahut could prove a tricky prospect for Henman as he produces a solid service game to hold to 15.

Henman 1-0 Mahut
The match gets under way after a 20-minute delay and Mahut nicks the first point with a drop shot at the net. Henman serves and volleys to move to 30-15 - he does likewise to take the first game.

Henman says he feels more comfortable on grass than he has done for years.

The 31-year-old British number three has finished as runner-up at the Queen's Club traditional Wimbledon warm-up three times.

Henman has already avoided a repeat of the ignominious defeat he suffered last year when he was knocked out in the first round and will aim to go further against Mahut.

The French 24-year-old is the world number 78 - two places below Henman in the rankings.

There is a slight breeze in west London but the temperature is warm as the players come out.
